But how? I'm not not attacking you UIF, but I don't see a way they can do that. They don't have much trade bait. Unless you count Sorokin which I would guess that all here would say is off the table. - JimmyP
It's a really good question!
If I was going to make a case for it, I'd say they lost to a good team that plays a really tough system. Carolina's given the Devils just as many fits as they gave the Isles, so they're for real even with all their injuries. With just a bit more finish, the Isles maybe take that series and hang right in there with the Devils in the second round the way the Canes are.
Maybe that extra scoring punch is brought in from the outside...they somehow clear enough cap space and convince a proven free agent to sign here. Maybe it comes from within...Horvat plays at least like the player he was in Vancouver a year ago, let alone the one he was earlier this season; and Wahlstrom comes back determined to make up for lost time, adding scoring support on the wing they didn't really have most of this season. Combined with Nelson and a healthy Barzal, they might have some decent weapons already for next season, and anything guys like Lee and Palmieri can contribute above and beyond what they did this year would be a welcome bonus.
Dobson and Romanov will each be a year older with a year's more experience, so maybe they take the next step in their development and really shore up the D, even pushing Pulock and Pelech for more of their ice time. They already have the goaltending to hang with just about anyone. It's probably the most frustrating message to pitch to the fans, but maybe this team -- hopefully with an upgrade but possibly even without -- can turn in a better result than it did this season.
I'm not really convinced by anything I just typed either, but it's not an impossible scenario, and, given the situation they're in with contracts and everything, it might be the best of a bunch of bad options. |

Yep pretty much this. Lameriello completely dropped the ball in a strategic sense this past TDL. There very well may have been a better opportunity to ice a more competitive team this upcoming season if he dumped what he could’ve and gained some assets. I don’t think we would’ve got a ton but we would have had more then we have now in a very good draft to trade or actually make the picks. If lameriello gets axed it will be because of the Horvat trade imo.
Bottom line is here we are with little to no options but to continue to try and go for it. Where we disagree is I honestly don’t see it leading to us being real competitive with the obvious regression of our unmovable players. It would be a stars being in line for us miracle between staying healthy and everyone playing at a much higher level then we’ve seen the last couple of seasons. I unfortunately fully expect mediocrity for this team and any perspective UFA’s will more then likely look at this team the same way. I’m hoping for a different outcome but I’m not really sure how. |

Yep. Hoping for everything to break right with the odds in favor of that not happening is not a recipe for success. |

Not really sure why he would do that and then you have the problem that nobody would want him anyway. |

I had the same surgery performed on my left knee. It’s a brutal rehab process and mine never recovered to a point that made skating at the NHL level possible. However, I do wish him well and hopefully he gets back to playing. |

You have to figure at his age his career is over. Absolutely sucks feel for the guy. I assume he’s insured for this sort of thing as far as his existing contract/career goes. |

Other teams outcomes and performance are a sure thing? I don't think there's a sure thing when it comes to sports. Thats why they play the games. There is luck injuries etc. that all are unaccounted for which play a part in every teams season. |
