Former Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving is rumored as a leading candidate to replace Lamoriello with proven head coaches, including Peter Laviolette, who won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and led the Nashville Predators to the Stanley Cup Final in 2017.
Any thoughts if this were to happen? - Nfdbulldawg
I'd rather go with someone like Dean Lombardi in terms of experience or a young and upcoming assistant GM. Been there done that with Peter. |

Very… “meh”.
Treliving is pretty decent on the trade and draft front. Not so hot when it comes to hiring coaches. - Wildschwein
I wouldn’t mind Laviolette. |

He’s fine.
But I’d still rather hire Andrew Brunette. |

Does not mean anything, but I've not read anything about Lou not coming back. Have to think Ledecky and Malkin expected more the last few years. Hopefully we hear something soon.

I thought for a second it came from a respected publication. |

They should be proactive. As Isles GM he brought the franchise back to respectability, but they've WON nothing. This team needs a retooling with younger and faster players. Lou isn't the guy to do that job.

I mean it's nothing more than a logical choice if Lou, for whatever reason, wasn't the GM next season. He's an experienced GM with a good track record. Dubas isn't going anywhere, so it's not even worth discussing that. |

What do you think of Dean Lombardi as a possible choice chief?

Lou being 80 is obviously not the future. I have to think L & M wanted more home playoff games the last two years. I would make the change now but I'm not an owner or GM and only play them on Hockeybuzz.

I’m not Chiefs, but personally I thought his work with the Kings was pretty abysmal from 2015 onwards.
What’s more, he strikes me as a man who views the game much the same as Lou. So he’d likely be a lateral move at best. |

Thanks schwein! There is only one chief. Those LA and Sharks teams did have a lot of talent and success. I know LA’s cap situation was not the best but they did win two Cuos. |

That they did.
But the game has changed a great deal since then. In fact, one of the very few NHL teams who still play similarly to those King Cup winning teams, is this current iteration of the Islanders.
And then there was the whole 2016 USA Worlds roster fiasco. |

I haven't put much thought into anyone yet, since nobody knows what's going on happen. When they hired Lou, Tom Fitzgerald was the guy I was hoping for and he's done an excellent job in NJ.
Off the top of my head, and subject to changing my mind, I'd probably prefer someone like Fitzgerald. A modern-age, well-regarded Asst. GM (or similar) who's ready to take the leap and has something to prove. Someone that understands the "new" NHL and can operate in way that fits that game can help build a competitive team.
I wouldn't be entirely against an older GM, like Treliving, because there's obvious benefits to someone with a proven track record. But I have zero interest in Lombardi. There's been plenty of GM positions open since he was fired in 2017 and none have hired him. |

So…you’d want the GM that traded Tkachuk?? That’s pretty interesting. |

Why? Tkachuk told them he wasn't going to re-sign there after this season. If they didn't trade him they would have lost him for nothing this summer.
He took a guy that openly said he wasn't going to come back to Calgary when he hit UFA and turned him into Huberdeau and Weegar. I'd say that's an excellent job. |

Thanks chief! I agree a modern-age well-regarded Asst. GM would be the way to go. Treliving if a more experienced GM was needed would be fine.

Bulldog guy wanted Tkachuk bad enough that he’s willing to give up Dobson and others when he’s proposing we can Lou and pick up the very same GM that traded him. I just found that ironic. I wasn’t referring to the trade itself. If you value Tkachuk enough, isn’t part of your job as a GM to get that player happy and stay? |

Not when the only thing that’ll make him happy is playing for an American franchise.
Treliving did the only thing that he could. And considering how his hands were tied, I thought he did pretty damned well. |

I mean if someone tells you "I'm not going to re-sign here next summer", and he holds 100% of the leverage, what can you really do?
He played there for 6 years. No sales pitch from a GM is going to get him to just magically reverse course and decide to stay. That's how you end up losing a top-tier UFA for nothing. Something we're all very familiar with. |

Same for not blaming Lou for JT walking. Lou just started with the Islanders and if a player has his heart on leaving, nothing the GM can do. The mistake was L & M not telling Garth to move JT at the deadline.
