winges outclassed the flyers in every aspect. End of story.
- hello it's me 2050

Where's the fun in that? Its the off-season, we have to stretch these topics out and beat every last ounce out of them.

Yes, I was trying to find a stat on HDCA for that series but could not find it. Shots were pretty close.
- jd250

That type of stat was not kept in that era.

To me it was the most significant difference in the series. Hextall/Snow combined for a .860 save% while Vernon had a .944 save % in the finals. And you can't say it was the difference in shots, Detroit had 115 while the Flyers had 108 shots. Vernon only gave up 6 goals in the entire series, while the Flyers gave up 16 goals!

Vernon wasn't even the Wings' starter that year heading into the POs. Osgood had thoroughly outplayed him for most of the regular season. Scottie made the switch in the POs and Vernon caught fire.

Neither team really had strength in net. Both were running mediocre tandems behind good defenses.

Vernon won the Smythe but he really should have shared it with the entire team for their defensive dominance.

Desjardins was still a top 10 NHL defenseman at the time.
- MJL

You think so? With names like Chris Pronger, Rob Blake, Nicklas Lidstrom, Scott Niedermayer, Brian Leetch, Brian Rafalski, Zdeno Chara, Dan Boyle, Adam Foote and Ed Jovanovski being around? And this is without bringing up Kimmo Timonen at that time. In 2004, I’m pretty sure Kim Johnsson took over as number 1 ahead of Eric Desjardins.

1. There may be several roles being created, not just one President of Hockey Ops Roles.
2. Looks like Tammy Granado will be in one of those roles, or at least be a finalist for one the roles.
3. Valerie Camillo really pushing for more women in hockey roles, especially exec roles
4. Those in the discussion felt Briere should be the PoHO and was being groomed for that role but that Briere himself wants to get his hands dirty and be the GM.
5. Panel not convinced about Frost and feel he should get a 1 year deal
6. Hart wants to win and there is some concern he may not want to sign an extension here if the team is wollowing in mediocrity by the time his contract is up.

Good lord he is brutal. Will Saint Ronnie get another GM job at the NHL level?

How many GM's in sports hurt 2 franchises in the same state in back to back jobs?

These are hard moves to defend, especially the disaster that was the expansion draft. These moves are worthy of being made by the baffon Fletcher and are really impossible to defend; though I know at least one person that would try to defend them.

That was a classic! Can't believe it's been 19 years. Farcy Smucker lays out Kap and the Laffs fans are roaring. Shortly thereafter JR roofs the game winner and you could hear a pin drop in the building! Instant classic to shut up all those Laffs faithful! One of the all-time iconic goals in Flyers playoff history!
On another note, someone should tell MJL to go read the Pens blog today. Guy wishes Hexy a belated 59th Birthday and then proceeds to shred him apart!

Yea, that was down to a tee. I wish they got more things right, looking at their big picture of dealing & wheelings.

I’ll always think that had to kept Weinrich that year we could have faired better on d. Never understood the trade with him as it was pre cap, the return wasn’t anything and he was always a solid though not flashy d man. He was not a number 1 but his presence would have helped

Toronto may still win this game and the series. But I love watching them squirm when their team gives up multi goal leads. There is something so satisfying about it.

They are almost as frustrating to cheer for as the Flyers. They suck on the back end and their goalies doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. No way they should lose this series….but that’s why you play the games.

It's scary to be honest. I really don't feel good about how this PoHOs role is panning out. Briere, if indeed will be the GM of this team, he is going to need help and I don't see it looking like he will get it. Flyers look to be putting diversity and inclusion ahead of hiring the best person or people for the role(s).

- jd250

IDK from the nasty knuckle podcast they talked a lot about Mellanby and even Dave Poulin as POHO and that none of the women candidates stood out. I have no idea if they have any inside info but I would be ok with either of those guys.
