Time for the Austin Matthews auction. Let's see if the team can get huge assets, like Eric Lindros when he was auctioned off. I'm sure the Rangers will be all in, as will a couple of the Western teams. Save the cap money and buy up a couple of decent free agents. Say goodbye to Willy and also grab assets and draft picks. Marner stays and unfortunately Tavares. Sign O'Reilly, Schenn and Accari. Jankrok, ZAR and Kerfoot goodbye. The same should also apply to Holl, Giordano and Brodie. Time to do a retool, not a teardown. Step back for one year and retool and come back firing in 2 years. Tampa did that and were successful. We do seem to have found our goaltender for the next 10 years. Keefe should go and replaced by Spezza.

Eric Lindros was entry level when he was auctioned off. Total team control for years.

Only way a team is handing over keys to the safe for Matthews is if an extension can be worked out. Teams don't give a kings ransom for 1 year of a player.

I guess misery loves company. It's frustrating to think of the years that I've watched this club. I went through the early 70's and the wars against Boston and the Rangers. Then the really good mid 70's teams that couldn't get by Montreal's great team. I remember the bleak '80's and the Leafs being in the Western Conference and making the playoffs with a sub .500 club and actually winning a couple of rounds the odd time. I remember the early 90's and the Gilmour years, almost making it to the finals but falling a goal short in game 7 to Los Angeles. I remember the late 90's and early 2000's and some great games, playing sometimes into the 3rd round. Then the bleak times since 2003 and not seeing them do anything for a generation.

You see, this team is made up of underachievers with talent. Dubas augmented them with more underachievers, until this year. He added some heart and soul guys, but what took so long? Now we have a bunch of jaded stars that never learned how to win and seem to be headed to spoiled milk in their careers. Unfortunately, the writing is on the wall. It has to change and to keep this core intact is asking for more bleak years going forward. Dubas has emptied the draft pick drawer so it's on them.

- PrinceLH

If it bothers you so much time to get a new hobby bro. Sports should and does elicit emotions but it shouldn't control you so much that you're "jaded". That's some serious PTSD. Hope you consult your doctor about it.

The guy had 70 (frank)ing hits in 11 games. SEVENTY! Get the (frank) out of there about not being timely. You can't throw that many and not get some timely ones.
- Aaron_85

Yeah he had some big ones. Just not illegal ones like Bennett and Gudas.

Leafs don't play like trash in Game 3 and this series is so much different.
- Aaron_85

Leafs played iffy the whole damn playoffs.

Game one.. like poop

Game two.. good

Games 3 through 6… iffy and reliant on comebacks

Series 2… the core poop the bed, cept Nylander for the last two games. It’s why they were a “two goal” team this series. The bottom six did their job just fine.

Ugh I just don't want to think about the final play. Not a penalty but it's a penalty last game. Pick and roll isn't a penalty unless directly for a scoring chance but then this isn't. It's just miserable because if the leafs weren't trash earlier in the series it wouldn't be an issue.
- Aaron_85

Just enough of a hold to not get called and he also had his stick in between Jarnkrok's legs which seemed to cause him to fall

Leafs losing the second round

=

Draft lottery suspicions

I don't get that one either...

tell ya what I found hilarious tonight... the NHL texting/tweeting about the Rielly goal/non-goal mid-game...

when have they EVER made a decision to something that quickly... smells like damage control to me ... but seriously just another sample of how inconsistent they are in their behavior.

such a gong show.

Long line of things that make them look petty. Like how the refs are a story more often than the players in the playoffs. NHL head office needs to let go of the old boys club and get some fresh new young blood in there. Dubas for Bettmans job!

Too bad they hadn't gotten Woll in sooner. Samsonov was giving up one bad goal a game. His save percentage was under .900. It's hard to win, when you're only averaging 2 goals a game. Woll did his job. Won 1 and lost 2 overtime games.

I don't watch a pile of other games but I'm sure the officiating is just as bad. Monkey was talking about all the poop that Pieterangelo took leading upto his slash, which I agree shouldn't happen but it's crazy that nothing is put on the officials for letting emotions and the game getting to that point. It's their job to manage that stuff.

I kept forgetting to post this, so I cannot remember the genius who posted that when Stamkos signed his big extension that Lecavalier was the star of the team. But he wasn't even in the league and hadn't played for Tampa in 4 years

The current one is over. There is no current one. The the core played like poop overall except for one game where two wingers scored.

It’s blowup time. This team is done.

I agree with you on this. There needs to be a better way. The refs all year have been inconsistent. Bunting getting 3 games for an elbow, but the next night a Boston defender, Nosec does the same thing and gets nothing. Then you watch that debacle in the last Oilers/ Knights game and watch a tomahawk chop against one of the NHL's elite players and gets a game and then give Darnell Nurse a 1 game suspension for fighting near the end of a game, but not his counterpart. Essentially, evening up the suspensions. There was also the Colorado player getting his neck broken on a bad check and his perpetrator gets no penalty or suspension at all. But Bunting....he's the worst of the worst.

You're going to be sad when it doesn't quite happen that way. I bet you 3 of the big 4 remain. Inlcuding Matthews

They said it on the broadcast that the league issued a league wide memo about the goal.

Not sure it's blowup time, but it is step back and retool time. There's a number of young, hungry teams coming hard from behind in the Atlantic. Detroit, Buffalo and Ottawa will be knocking on the door next year. Leafs better be ready, because I see them doing a step backwards next year. A retool, not a rebuild is needed.

I would imagine there is some type of crookedness in most major sports leagues. NCAA, CIS most professional leagues etc.

You are such a (frank)ing douche sometimes, twisting what people say to deliberately attempt to seem knowledgeable.

No, lecavalier wasn’t but he was while Stamkos created his position in Tampa. They only played together for half a decade.

Go on, continue your absurd love for Matthews, it’s similar to a young child with their favourite stuffed animal

Well the only piece of evidence that I have seen in the NHL that the league dictates anything between teams was the John Scott fiasco. Remember when the fans voted him to the all star game? Right before if you recall he got traded to a team with a player with more votes and only the player with the most votes got to the all star game. Everyone knew the league didn't like the enforcer going and everyone also knew the league called up a GM to make some BS trade but public outcry forced them to allow him at the game. They then changed the rules and I don't think people vote anymore or if they do it's a set amount of guys and not just anyone on the team.

never trust the public in such things

Of course he got some. Boss ass ones too. But most weren’t stunningly effective and often left him out of position. He was easy to bait. Everyone needs one wild guy, like Gudas, as classless as he is. But a smaller framed one or an older one is only for teams that have cap concerns. 1.5 for a finisher isn’t going to get you much.
