So what do you guys think? Edmonton is in a similar situation as Toronto.
We look to be on the verge of elimination in 6 by a very good Las Vegas Team after a a very competitive series against the under rated Kings. The Oil boast 2 of the players in the league if not the 2 best and came into the playoffs the hottest team in the NHL .
This roster is pretty much set for 2 full seasons after this one before we start losing key players to free agency.
They are not without their warts , but I believe this team can win a Stanley Cup, but there’s plenty of reasons why it won’t happen over the course of a series or 4 of playoff hockey.
Is this the kind of situation where you ride out this core group and go for a Stanley or do you start trading away pieces before we lose them for nothing.
I have no problem losing Draisaitl and McDavid to free agency so long as they deliver us a Stanley Cup before that happens.
What are your thoughts, being faces with a similar situation? |

I feel like Edmonton can still run the same core at least one more year after this one.
They need to improve their 5 on 5 play, adding Ekholm was HUGE for the Oilers.
They could use better players in their bottom 6, they could use help in goal... but that's a good team overall.
I don't think it makes sense to even risk losing your star players as free agents if you can avoid it. You can avoid a 5-7 rebuild by trading them away before it happens. Obviously extending them also works if the money works.

I'm not interested in nitpicking or playing semantics either.
Directly from James Mirtle's Athletic article (posted today):
It’s not exactly the league’s best-kept secret that Shanahan and Dubas have been somewhat at odds this season, something evident in the fact they haven’t watched many games together, a change from years past.

Yeah if it doesn’t work hard retool. Rebuild only if you can move everyone. Leafs got that road ahead as well.

Toronto media gonna do their thing with anthills into mountains. Dubas has no contract and has won exactly 1 round of playoff hockey as a GM. I can see why they extend him and I can see him not getting a contract.

You literally said he was "never" in the box with Dubas.
The fact of the matter is that he has been in the box significantly less than in years past.
Whether there is actually a schism between the two is conjecture, but don't try to turn what I said into "nitpicking" when it's demonstrably true. |

Fun facts:
Leafs lead the 2023 playoffs in most blocked shots per game. They also sit 4th in hits per game (the top 3 all were eliminated in round 1)
What's this about not being able to play a certain brand of hockey? I mean they did all sorts of things not expected of them.
It sucks they lost in the fashion they lost but trying to be objective, the games were real tight checking, playoff games. It'll mean something for guys looking to stay in Toronto. |

Oh, is this your escape hatch, bro?
You tried to dismiss my argument and now you're telling me I'm trying to make this about semantics.
And now you're trying to insinuate that my "feelings" are hurt? Ffs.
Look, my point was that Shanahan and Dubas used to share the box quite a bit but it has been noticeably less this past season. This may not have anything to do with a "schism" between the two and simply just a change in how Shanahan wants to view games.
I don't know. But there is media speculation, and it has been an interesting change from years past that is left to conjecture.
Will be interesting to see if it's a nothingburger with Dubas signing a big extension. |

Chicago will spend on free agents just to get to the cap floor and have a few veteran NHLer's to play with Bedard. I'm thinking 3 or 4 guys at 4 to 5M just to get to the floor. They still have plenty of cap space to take on a cap dump like Murray if the extra piece to move him is sufficient. Dubas and Davidson have worked deals in the past. The question is will Dubas be around to make a trade like this. - boilermaker100

Hmmm….to be perfectly honest, I would risk everything for a Stanley. The rub is whether or not we can win with McDavid/Draisaitl. One Stanley for another 10 years of total darkness seems like a good deal to me. |

Where he sits is irrelevant. Shanny will look after himself. If the board comes down hard on him and moving Keefe isn’t a big enough sacrifice, he’ll dump Dubas. If he has full autonomy, he might move him if he thinks he can bring in someone better. Same with Keefe. |

Not sure there is someone out there better than Dubas
As for Keefe whatever, bring him back or don’t. Fans should stop pretending they know the impact of a coach.
Bruce would be cool just because you know how bad he wants the job, that’s all I got |

Is it as simple as this?
Bobrovsky save percentage in the 5 games of the series:
Game 5 .962
Game 4 .920
Game 3 .917
Game 2: .946
Game 1 . 944
