That presser was just so off kilter - this hire better be a home run or he’s gonna be taking a lot of heat -

Uh oh, don't let the know it all trolls like fifty who are trying to rub this in know that. Might make them question whether they really do know everything or if maybe they're just another jabroni that doesn't have a clue what this team needs. - joel878
Lol almost like this guy actually did a good job and was well liked. Pretty crazy for people to quit afterwards. |

Dubas was speaking for himself. He was either negotiating in public or speaking honestly. People seem to have strong views one way or another.

I've always been impressed with Shanahan. Seems like a pretty smart and character guy.
His presser today seems to me that this could be an emotional type reaction. Like he was shocked that 1. Dubas showed doubt about being a Leaf. 2. Dubas got his agent to propose a new financial package.
But that doesn't fit my image of Shanahan.
Seems weird they offered Dubas an extension, then this week it falls apart when Dubas tries to renegotiate.
I'm guessing the long chat they had on Wednesday or Thursday may have given Shanahan some concern on Dubas' plan.
As president, you want people who want to be here. And the doubt definitely had some impact.
I'm hoping it's more about Shanahan flexing and demanding that those who work for The Leafs have to want to be here 100 percent, rather than Shanahan having a knee jerk reaction and feeling offended in some way.
And now Spezza resigns and moves on. That's a shame, I always liked him.
I'm on the fence as to whether Dubas should have been back. He did have a damn good trade deadline this year, but his overall playoff success is still wanting. And a new GM and plan will have some impact on Matthews' return. On the other hand, management changes occasionally and players don't always move on, but this is a crucial summer and I'm curious to see how it turns out.
There's no doubt big changes are on their way. |

Unless he has a guy ready to plug in.. maybe... it's gonna be hectic to interview hire and be prepared for the draft and FA and trades and NMC kicking in all in under 6 weeks... that's a big ask for anyone never mind the fishbowl of Toronto.

Naw it isnt that crazy. The draft has an entire scouting department and the hire will have to lean on it and the rest of his team.
The issue is the contracts and FA but FA is probably a little easier once the other 2 are dealt with.
Also, I'd be curious if this has a ripple effect of getting guys like Bunting/Kase/Kampf to come in on show me deals. |

I disagree. I think Shanny gave one of the most honest press conferences I can ever recall for a Maple Leaf manager. The detailed timeline was more that I was expecting. Dubas clearly stated that he was unsure that he wanted to remain as GM of the Leafs and that he didn't want to be the GM of another team. The fact that his agent increased the asking price after Dubas' press conference raised some concern that the "I don't want to be the GM of another team" line was baloney and he was looking for a big payday. The proof will be where Dubas lands as GM of another team. I'm confident that the Leafs made a fair offer and Dubas will regret the way he handled this.

Playing devils advocate here but what Dubas wanted autonomy because he wanted to make certain moves but they weren’t going to happen.
There is definitely another side to this but I doubt we’ll ever here it. |

They had been negotiating since the TDL. Suddenly Dubas says I don’t want to be anywhere else now give me more money. Does that make sense and is a $2-4M gap enough to say (frank) it let’s dump him and go into a critical 6 week period without a GM, a Spezza knowing that Pridham is currently interviewing for other jobs?
The Leafs management system suddenly look as bad as it has in a long time. |

I think Dubas had autonomy. This Leaf team is about as un-Shanahan-like as it possibly could be. Dubas' presser had some honesty and some baloney IMO. We'll soon see if it was about money when the Penguins or some other team announces that Dubas signs a lucrative deal.

I agree.
Another hot take I heard was signing Matthew maybe gets a little harder. Maybe he was willing to take less with Dubas here but now wants every dollar he can get.
Theres a lot of questions that will be answered in 6 weeks time.

What Shanahan said was that the gap wasn't the only issue that raised a concern - but doing a press conference that Shanahan didn't think was a good idea and saying that it was only about family then asking for more seems to have a certain odour to it. As someone that has hired and employeed many over the years, if an employee says out loud that "I'm not sure I want to work here anymore" my first reaction is - don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Shanahan did the right thing here. Spezza and Dubas were pals, he quit knowing he would be fired into the sun. Keefe is done like dinner. |
