Brennan Othmann - the biggest target of model criticism since its inception in 2021 - is not looking great after he failed to improve on his solid D+1 campaign, and actually regressed in OHL and WJC-20 production.
He's still got a chance, but it's dwindling. #NYR

This is what I don’t get. To push for a rebuild and lament about lack of playoffs.
A proper rebuild takes 5-10 years where there is not any hope of playoffs. So don’t understand the logic. Either sit back for a decade collecting draft picks and trying to develop them or retool what you have to find what works.
Canucks are on a long loser run so either they shed dead weight salary to retool or just move assets to draft and rebuild. - Quinn's Quest
A proper rebuild begins with an owner listening to his hockey people if they advise him such. An owner can also mandate it. Neither happened here say no more. |

It often happen that D rise high by draft day so won’t be surprised. At the same time I don’t know enough about the team priorities 5-10 rankings to influence their selection.
So at this point anything can happen. What the consensus is that real good talent is available. What the Canucks need is obvious. What they will have available seems murky. So many choices on wingers and that’s great and all but we all know enough is enough lol. The fear is a reach on D gets you an OJ and you miss out on a KT. Problem is it’s so hard to get top cost controlled D that it’s just worth the risk.
At this point what do Canucks have to lose? More years of futility. We are used to that and Management groups and coaches getting fired. It’s the Canuck way. - Quinn's Quest
Consensus is a very deep draft in the top 40 or so. Heavy on F’s early before D become BPA. As you said drafts can unfold in unexpected ways. This draft will be fun. |

Many scouts have said the highest they would take a D on talent in this draft is early to mid teens. They have also said they will be a bit overvalued by that and public rankings now throwing 3 or more D inside the top 10.
As I said though Shakir Muldiilin was taken 20th in a lesser draft and came with a bit more jam coming into the draft but now a comparable is to be taken 10th? - manvanfan
In 2019 Moritz Sedier was generally ranked between 15-23, Craig Button had him at #26 and the Athletics Scott Wheeler didn't even have him in the first round, but Yzerman with all his genius said screw that, this kids good and drafted him fifth overall. Turns out he was right!! Seider not only won the Calder Trophy but he's an excellent defenseman in all facets of the game.
I would suspect there's going to be a very good defenseman everyone is overlooking because of all the talented forwards. Let's be those guys for once!! |

I don’t see a top pair D in this draft but that means squat when D are young they can develop over a few years into a stellar pick.
Who do you like in descending order of D this draft?

Teams will go off the boards again this year. If a D or two goes early one of the several C's will fall to them. |

With the overall strength of this draft really high it's going to be interesting to see how things playout once someone goes off-the-board. |

Imo D in this draft don’t scream wow but can be better with some seasoning & work on their warts.
Reinbacher seems the most ready to make the jump or after a year in the AHL. Predict top 3 D ceiling
ASP the most gifted offensive D but size & poor defence holds him back from being a top pair D. Top 4 ceiling.
Simashev NHL prototype defensive D man who hasn’t shown offense. Big mean & smooth. Can be a D shutdown top 2-4 D.
Willander an impressive rise of late & could be a gem where he gets picked.
Morin less heralded could be a steal later in the draft.
Others like Gulyayev safe pick in his range. Bonk 2-3 years away of being ready & cannot decide how to project him. Molendyk imo a 2nd rounder but smallish so bottom pairing floor. A few others worth picking in the mid 2nd have nice skill sets with bigger warts. |

Dealing the 11th to the Red Wings for the 17th and our own second round pick back would IMHO still give you a great pick in the first round and give you a quality second rounder....just a thought.
The Sabres are also in the position where they can move up and move an extra second round pick to do so. |

Yes & was one of my trade down ideas. At 17 the drop off isn’t too significant & a good prospect easily could fall to there. The 2nd would be a major add to the prospect pool. I think the Hawks even in rebuild mode might want to use picks to move up having 2-1sts 3-2nds. |

Canucks trading down would mean going for D be my guess. Doesn’t make sense to take a C unless off the board kind of pick or really high on someone like a Stenburg. |

Dobbers final rankings, everyone is all over the map.

Took a quick look at that list. No trade down we get a good C or D in Stenburg or Reinbacher then go for D with our 3rds like any of Bonk or Strbak or Morin. |

It always happens being so hard to predict their development & team needs. RHD being gold so sure that 1 goes maybe 2. |

And shakes up all of the "experts" predictions. If they stay at 11 I'll imagine a so called higher ranking player will fall to them. |

Agree, and why I don't see them making a trade down, if at all, until right before they are scheduled to pick. |

Unless their guy is falling and there's an opportunity to trade down. Not sure they have the balls to do that though, their MO is the safe BPA route (winger).

To be fair, they don't really have an "M.O.", they've had one draft as a management group. I know people like to lump the 53 years of failure on the West Coast all together, losing forever does that, but they have a chance here to do something good. Hopefully it plays out like that. |

My goodness, the Coyotes have two first round picks, #6 and #12, one second round pick and FOUR third round picks. Since they brought Bill Armstrong on as GM to perform a rebuild in the summer of 2020 they've had, including the upcoming 2023 draft, six first round picks in three consecutive years (2021-2022-2023), six second round picks and six third round picks.
That's eighteen picks in first three rounds in three years. That's an incredible amount of potential talent and depth for their organization. Wherever they end up moving to. Including the 2023 draft the Canucks will have had SIX picks in the first three rounds of 2021-2022-2023. |
