Tavares isn't going anywhere.
It's Marner or Nylander. One of them has one of the best value contracts in the NHL. - mjones242
Yeah, Marner stays because he's the actual elite level player who plays at both ends of the rink against top lines and kills penalties.
But this is exactly why Tavares must be traded. Because if he is, you get to keep everybody else that is actually worth keeping. |

Then your skepticism of actually winning a Stanley Cup with that contract on the books should be sky high instead of sky blue. - Rare_Jewel
There's a much better chance of that happening than Tavares going to Buffalo. I wouldn't bet on that transaction anytime soon.

Hard pass on trading the leading point producer.
Trade Nylander instead. Dump Tavares on Buffalo. 19 million cleared. - Rare_Jewel
You make this sound so easy but its not. |

Yes. Close to Oakville. His uncle is a legend in Buffalo.
New management, new direction.
He got his dream. It didn't work out. Time to move on.
If he really loves the Leafs, he'll help them and go away. - Rare_Jewel
He's pulling a Sundin and says no way jose. I'm playing out my contract here.
You want to move me, buy me out.

JT's stats are exactly like they were when he signed the deal. Tad slower but that would also have been expected. Hes not going anywhere |

If you look at Cup winning teams, they almost always have an above average goalie historically. Here's the list since the lockout.
Kuemper - .902 SV%
Vasi - .937 SV%
Vasi- .927 SV%
Binnington - .914 SV%
Holtby - .922 SV%
Fleury + Murray - .937 SV% + .924 SV%
Murray - .923 SV%
Crawford - .924 SV%
Quick - .911 SV%
Crawford - .932 SV%
Quick - .946 SV%
Thomas - .940 SV%
Niemi - .910 SV%
Fleury - .908 SV%
Osgood - 926 SV%
Giguere - 922 SV%
Ward - .920 SV%
Average SV% - .923 SV%
In the past 6 years, Hellebuyck is tied for 3rd among goalies with 40+ games played with .916 SV%. He's the best available option for the Leafs. - Rare_Jewel
4 of those 15 had SV%'s below the league average and Binnington was lighting in a bottle and was barely over the league average. So essentially 1/3 of the cup winners in that period had average or below average goaltending.
Good goaltending can win cups, & of course elite can too but you have to sacrifice something to be able to sign an elite goalie. I don't see how the Leafs are 'just an elite goalie' away from a cup.
The entire narrative that JT will simply agree to get traded to Buffalo of all places is laughable.

A new GM is going to have his own ideas. - gravyface
I just think this team is in the window now. Minor tweaks here and there.
Big blockbuster trades feels like we could be a year away from rebuild.
Again I don’t know the right answer but full blowout doesn’t make me optimistic. Or trading pennies on the dollar. |

He is slowing down noticeably and his numbers are still up there because of the guys around him keeping him afloat. He's not worth the cap hit anymore.
Matthews is going to want 13, Nylander is going to want 9 or 10.
And they still need better guys on D and a better goalie.
That 11 million is so much better used on everything else than Tavares at 33+. |

I do not get the love for Dubois. He's 6'2 and 205 and occasionally shows up. He's never hit 30 goals. He's never been a point / game player. I realize he's 24, but he's not a consistent performer.
"He's an enigma" which is code for he bothers to play when he wants to. The same thing they say about Willy. I don't want two of them. - Monkeypunk
Me neither, man.
It'd be a negative get, as far as I'm concerned. |

but the point is that rare_jewel want Tavares gone.
Tavares isn't waiving his mnc.
So rare_jewel want Tavares gone, then you buy him out.
He'll to go to whichever team he wants for min salary after that |

Or, you fire Shanahan, bring in a President and a GM combo that aren't complete idiots and you tell Tavares, sorry buddy, new management, new direction. You are no longer the captain, start thinking about where you want to play next year.
Players with NMC/NTC have accepted trades many, many times in the past. Players don't want to play where they know they aren't a part of the plans anymore. The NMC is simply there to better negotiate where they can end up playing instead of having zero control.
It was a nice story. He came home to play for a ridiculous amount of money and became the captain. They tried it out for 5 years. It didn't work out. Time to move on. |

Marner leading playoff point producer the past 8 years. Selke type penalty killer.
Nylander gets the benefit of never playing defense, never killing penalties and getting softer match-ups.
I'd keep him too but if you want Dubois and Hellebuyck, it's Nylander who goes. - Rare_Jewel
I am once again begging people to update their profile of understanding of Nylander. |

Keep a handkerchief handy for your tears because JT isn’t going anywhere. He’ll play out this contract and likely resign with the leafs for 3-4 more years at around $5-6 million. |

I do not think anyone is arguing moving JT would help. But good luck getting him to waive and a team to take him

More a reflection on the piss poor offence they are facing. Wait until he opens that five hole up and reverts to poop the bed fred.

Remember when MacKinnnon and Pasternak entered the final years of their deals without much noise? And then re-signed when the parties got to the right number?
And all the other players?
I know I know ...the noise in Toronto makes it different here. |
