Also why you shouldn’t yet count on Levi being an all star….. - ImThatGuy
I don't get this line of thinking. One can reject the idea of throwing huge assets and an unproven guy like Carter Hart. If you reject the idea of this trade, that is NOT the same as anointing Levi as the chosen one. I reject the Hart idea because - if they are both lottery tickets - I'd rather not spend a fortune to get my ticket.

I think unless you get one of the top 3 goalies, you kind of have to count on an unknown quantity. It seems like most of the league had their goaltending situations go sideways at some point, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing as the unexpected goalie ended up being *good enough*. - Slump Buster
So you make that trade fir hellebuyck too? |
|

|
Flip it around at the same time. Its exactly why you shouldn't count on an unknown quantity. - TheHank
Like Adin Hill ?
Or Sergei Bobrovsky the $10M man the Panthers tried to replace with 13th overall pick Spencer Knight?
Even the best goalies in the world can have a rough stretch.
It’s literally a crapshoot |

16.7 GAR and 2.8 WAR with a .907 (league average this year was .904) on a terrible Philly team this season.
He'd be a huge upgrade over anything they've had in years (maybe minus Levi) - Hank Balling
League average the last 2 years. Little above 1 year, little below the other. Fine getting for him a fair price, but he's not worth 1st round assets, imo.

No, I wouldn't. I think the value is probably fair. The cup-winning goalies are almost never the cream of the crop (and often someone the guy is completely unheralded). I am fine hitching the wagon to Levi and another vet right now. It isn't like was are looking for a #1 center. These guys are everywhere. |

Im not, I’m also not in a rush to trade the 13th overall pick for Hart or even hellebuyck for that matter.

If all the best guys are off the board by 13 i think you have to seriously consider it.
It feels like a lot but unless you are getting a falling Michkov, odds are that player at 13 is like 4 years away from being a 3rd liner |

Fair enough. I'm cool with Levi for now too. If he fails out it'll just suck to rehash this 3 years from now. Same could be said for helle too. |

Yeah but you can get these guys at the deadline for 3rd round picks, or FA, or anywhere between round 2-7, especially if their drafting braintrust is as good as they think it is. |

But what about the rest of the trade package? It was more than just the first.
And again, is Hart really that much more likely to be *good enough* than Levi is? Weren't there whispers about Harts mental toughness (or something like that)?

I agree with that and that’s why I think neither get that great of a package because the gold market has been very cold the last few years because even though NHL teams are very dumb, they have smartened up on the goalie market |

I am at the head of the "draft and develop" crowd, but I have no problem moving picks for players right now. Our system is set up for years.

Which is weird how the Sabres just cannot find one of those everywhere guys |

If it were any other draft I’d agree with this sentiment.
I think the Sabres are getting a top 10 caliber player at 13 this year no doubt |

I must have missed this - what has Hart done in this league that makes him worth that package?

Recency bias. Remember all of the years before that (going back to Hasek) where we always seemed to have goaltending? Hell, TMGM had to get rid of guys because they played well (thus hurting the tank).

Feels like way too much to me.
4 years away from a 3rd liner? Is that really how you feel about a #13 in a strong draft? |

I would say that 13 in this draft is like a 6 - 10 in other drafts. It might be nothing, but it could also be a Cozens/Quinn level player (that doesn't take 4 years to show up).

I dont think it's a strong draft. I think the top 10 is strong. The rest? Could go either way. A lot of the smart twitter draft guys feel the same way.
If someone from that top 10 falls to 13 then yeah for sure you keep that. But Im not going to be sad about missing out on matthew wood at 13 because he's going to the same college Tage did. |

You can’t say goalies are extremely volatile when talking about trading for one, and then in the same sentence, call a guy with seven career games, a definite cornerstone franchise goalie.
That’s all I meant |

Nor the Leafs, Oilers or half the teams in the league.
I am in the get one of Hart/Helly camp.

That was TMGM. Not Adams who has proven so far incapable of finding a competent “value” goalie. |
