How are they a joke?
They balked at the demands of a gm who continually failed in the playoffs.
5 days havent undone anything.
Its ok people.
Maybe wait to see who they hire and what direction they go in. Its not all over.....well hopefully losing every single year early in the playoffs (often to teams they were supposed to beat) is. - Fakepartofme
If any other organization put out a circus like the leafs did in firing their GM you'd be laughing at how ridiculous they look.
They absolutely look like a joke.
You can believe every word of Shanahan but at the same time understand Dubas put out a statement pointing at that none of the demands were new to Shanahan or the board. I doubt the 11th hour changes were all of a sudden new to Shanahan. But hey, believe whoever you wanna believe.
Also, I've never stated they couldn't make a good hire. It has nothing to do with the next hire. It's the fact they looked like a joke in how they handled a simple situation. Don't twist my words or take them out of context please.

Ottawa seems like the better fit ...
But maybe a pres/gm position in Pitt would be enticing. - The Law
I think he’s been trying to hold out until the Ottawa ownership was resolved. The senior guys from FSG gave him the long weekend to decide on the Pens job while they all partied in Monte for the Grand Prix. |

Even companies that print money still have a limit on how much they want to pay someone.
Maybe they thought he was the best at the current agreed upon figure but then dubas waivered, publicly said he was unsure of if he wanted to be a gm. Then asked for more money.
Thats a big red flag specially for a gm who just now finally won 1 playoff round.
We'll see how it all plays out - Fakepartofme
Dubas made claims that it wasn't a last minute ask for money. I don't know why he is thrown under the bus and Shanahan, the guy whole sleeps with his teammates wife is the most honest and trustworthy guy around.
Dubas ain't no innocent person in the demise of the relationship because we've all heard the stories of friction between the two. Could very well be Shanahan didn't want to extend him and the board did and when Dubas made his press conference Shanahan saw the opportunity to get rid of him and took it.

I could see that 4 day or whatever period making Shanny’s relationship with the Board and Dubas too much trouble so he just cut bait. |

You think an organization that is ready to hand out a 5 year contract then 5 days later rescind said deal at the very last minute in such a public way isn't a joke? That's bush league.
They could have quietly let him go. Didn't need the drama of a play by play.

Performance management does not care about people, they care about results, that's it. No different than most companies where results are the only thing that keep you employed as a Sr Execs. Mental health is for lower people, not Sr Execs having to deliver results...no excuse allowed. - Symba007
I'm not even trying to defend Shanny or the board but MLSE is definitely NOT run like some big bank or insurance company.
Even the corporately filtered Amazon series painted a pretty strong picture of how the organization is run and operated by the top down. Every player has raved about working within the structure.
Shanny v. Dubas has nothing to do with 'mental health' or conversely money.
Some will argue that an intelligent guy like Shanny (and the higher ups) used their 9 years of interactions with Dubas ...along with the current discourse/negotiation happening at the time to arrive at an informed opinion that they wanted a new voice in the room .....but
I believe (via russian sources) Skalapy penned an emotional letter to the Board about Dubas' failure to obtain Poone Jenner. That letter caused a re-think and a change in direction. Once that letter got in front of Shanny on Thursday it was over. |

We will never know the true story for years to come until someone puts out a book. Whatever I think doesn't matter as the leafs will have a new GM and I'll still cheer for them. Aslong as they don't attempt a rebuild...

Because the deal they were going to hand out that by all accounts was agreed to wasnt the deal that dubas turned around and said he now wanted.
Dubas wanted to do the presser, he was advised against it.
Dubas changed the terms of the deal by all accounts. |

agree on Ottawa, but it would be more interesting to see him in Pitts. looking at the rosters and the point they are at. Ott is more like when he took over the Leafs.
the Pens are at the other end.

That is fair.
I just can't understand the anger with this.
I've been on Hockeybuzz far too much the last few years and if there has been one guy here to defend Dubas from the bashing it has been me. It is like Shanny axed off a family member for some of these people...
I just can't see the significance of this. This doesn't greatly improve or decrease the Leafs chances of winning a cup. If anything it gives us more to talk about while moving laterally in terms of on ice entertainment value. Who cares. |

And as I've told you and your impossibly small brain many times now; I didn't come to hate Holl because I need someone to hate. I hated him because he was abysmal and actively made the Leafs worse every time he touched the ice. And I am more than validated in that.
But hey, now that him playing here is in the past, maybe you can finally admit you were laughably wrong. That he was a detriment to the team. Just because you require hindsight to finally arrive at the correct destination, doesn't mean others do, too. |

Dubas said otherwise in his statement about the terms of the deal. I think he made those asks but I don't think it was Thursday from his agent.
We also had Shanahan gloss over the email Dubas sent thursday night claiming to want to be Toronto GM. We don't know if he accepted whatever terms were presented already.
We can agree to disagree on it.
