Treliving experience:
Career ECHLer.
Assistant GM of the Coyotes and GM of the San Antonio Rampage.
Drafted Blake Wheeler and never signed him.
Learned everything he knew from a former player agent who had never been a GM and hasn't been one since.
Results: Horrible.
2nd job: GM of the Flames for 9 years.
Results: Missed playoffs: 4 times, 2nd round: 3 times, 1st round exit twice.
Drafted Sam Bennett then traded him for a bag of pucks.
Drafted Tkachuk. Traded him. Was forced to but still, it happened and hasn't worked in the short term.
Drafted Adam Fox. You guessed it. Traded him too.
Stole Dougie Hamilton from Boston then traded him (with Adam Fox) for less than they were worth 3 years later.
Let Johnny Hockey go for nothing. (Get ready for this one with Matthews if he doesn't get Tkachuk'd first.)
Oh yeah, this guy looks PUUUUUUUUURFECT for the Leafs. Perfect. - Rare_Jewel
Tkachuk forced his hand and said he wouldn't re-sign.
Gaudreau was going to sign and then last minute decided to go to a worse team for less money.. Gaudreau screwed over Treliving

this needs an oy-vey.
give him a few year before you looking down at him.
Dubas go Matt Murray for free. Why complain cause he's always hurt. that will allow for LTIR usage - dmnted
See, still happens to this day.
The Leafs are not in a position to play wait and see with this guy or this current situation. They've already made dozens of mistakes. A few more and it's rebuild time all over again. |

As far as I recall, the vast majority of the people here didn't like the Murray trade when it happened. But ok. - Scabeh
We all wanted Ottawa to retain 50% but Dubas settled for less. |

Is it Treliving's fault that Huberdeau went from a 115 point season to a 60 point season? |

The Sam Bennett one is a hilarious one because I remember me wanting to send a 2nd for Bennett and getting ridiculed for it
97% of hockey fans thought he was a bum. - Santo_44
at least the leafs now have the guy who traded him away

So he pulled a Tavares. Great.
I don't think you can take that risk as a GM, not with your best player considering the asset he would bring back. - Scabeh
It's difficult when you're in the hunt - like the Flames and Islanders were - and the player is non-committal. I sort of believe both Tavares and Gaudreau that they really didn't know - on one hand they had probably thought about it (being closer to home, playing closer to family or whatever) and it had strong appeal already, but the team that drafted you, developed you and where you've made your life since that day has a lot of appeal as well. I think in their heart of hearts, so to speak, they knew they weren't coming back when they told the GM they were still deciding, but I bet on the surface they hadn't faced it yet.
As a GM you don't want to lose that asset for nothing, but what if he goes on to win the Smythe that year and win you the cup? He would be the best possible player you could trade for at the TDL to help your team win. And you already have him for nothing. You just don't get anything when he leaves.

Missed the playoffs 4 out of 9 years. Never got past the 2nd round. That's definitely his fault.
It's okay, he'll be a good lil puppet for Shanahan. |

My point is its hilarious people are judging him for that trade.
Also what were his options? keep him when he was obviously not fitting in or trade him for his worth?

my biggest issue was he didnt get enough to take murray. I didnt want him but if you were....hold out for a huge sweetener
i have no problem making a small bet on a goalie, as long as you have plan b..and he did
one worked, one didnt

We all recall how bad Bennett was in Calgary right? Or are we just pretending that never happened? |

The flames could do a 180 next season. People will say it’s because they got rid of Treliving. |

He wasn't bad in Calgary, especially when they made the playoffs (just barely half the time).
Management (Treliving and the coaches he hired) didn't utilize him properly. |

Contending terms don’t trade their free agents. That’s where the term “own rentals” came from. |

Stating the facts here. If you're laughing, it's at the Leafs and Treliving's incompetence. |

I think it was different for both Tavares and Guadreau.
Johnny Hockey said he wanted to go home and then when home wanted to sign him he said nah, lemme go to (frank)ing Columbus.
But with Tavares, I feel like he only decided to actually maybe leave the Island after they fired everyone he was loyal to (Snow and Weight). And even then it was a maybe. But he bought into what Dubas sold him. |

One thing we do know is that Treliving will build the team from the back end out.. A new and improved defense |
