The loss of Matthew Tkachuk was the final nail in the coffin.

Lousy Vegas did not have to struggle like other expansion teams of the past.

I don't know. Just watched a career backup making nothing beat a 10 million a year goalie. Maybe it's more about the whole team. Just saying. |

No question in a Cap world, you have to be careful what you pay the goalie. Does not mean you use a lousy goalie, but it’s possible to win without an elite top paid goalie. |

Fair enough!
I think, long term, it's far riskier to pay big money and many years for a goaltender than it is to let a "sure bet" go and search for a more affordable replacement. I believe goaltending overall is better now than it's ever been -- whether we're talking about hidden gems like Hill, or just pros who can keep you in more games than not, there seem to always be capable options out there. While there's certainly a difference between the "good" and the "elite," I don't think it's as wide of a gap as it was years ago, and I'm not sure it's worth the difference in price and term you have to pay or the risk that an elite goalie will fall off considerably just a few years into that term. |

That's a risk for every high paid player. Unfortunately that's the way the NHL market is right now. GMs will give out a contract knowing the last few years will be an over payment. |
