Carter Verhagee signing a two year deal as a free agent for next to nothing when be originally signed in Florida.

There’s diamonds out there, find them.

Jared McCann was left off of not one but two expansion lists for Seattle. Was dealt way too early by Florida.

They are out there, just because there is a fancy sticker price doesn’t mean it’s not effective.

- Swedish_Jesus

Why haven’t they found one yet ?

We’ve gotten Comrie, Lyubushkin, Hinostroza, Bjork (trade) etc.

Where are these diamonds?

It’s super cool to say we have these cap savings and these smart FO people with a huge analytics department. How about they make something of it?

Agreed but this is ultimately my gripe with gibson. Idk that hes more of a known than any of the top 3 or 4 UFA goalies.

Sure ANA sucks, but so did he. So you're still assuming a ton of risk and likely giving up assets for it.

If im giving up value for a goalie, i need to be sure, or as close to it as i can get.

I'm with you, not a guy I'd give up a lot for.

No.

Not sure if your intention was to give only two options that are miles apart, but there is a whole ocean inbetween those two presented.

- IonSabres

I get that for sure. I still think Gibson would be an improvement over UPL, though, so if that's what they decide to do, I'm good.

Going into next year with a Levi/UPL tandem would be insane to me

They have, unless you want to ignore all of the good that’s happened here the last few years.

I’m excited to see what’s next.

Drafting, hitting on those picks, and getting elite talent signed to value deals is infinitely harder than *checks notes* finding a #4 to play with a 1st overall pick d-man.

That’s the thing about diamonds though - they really aren’t rare and the prices are driven up by artificial scarcity.

Just like in the NHL. Everything gold is brass by now. There’s 1 special player in the league and about 15 more who are incredibly gifted…

Then a bunch if diamonds and coal.

If it was that easy, why did they never get that D man to play with there #1 overall pick a few years before Power.

To be fair this is the same person that said they would rather missed the playoffs to get a chance at one of the top three picks them to get into the playoffs and get beat by Boston so that’s a thing.

It’s all over the board here.

If you make 5 1st round selections in 2 years, every team still loves their picks at this stage.

I’ve said this in a few Twitter debates but everyone loves prospects until they are 22-23 years old and their RAPM charts are a little too red.

Some of these guys aren’t panning out

People are still indifferent on Mittelstadt and he just put up a 60 point season

Some people get their nut off looking at CapFriendly all day. I don’t get it.

Well cause you still don't know what you have. But it also gets to a point especially when you have such a young team already that even some of those picks will never see the ice with the Sabres. It will only get harder decision wise, especially if these prospects do keep developing as well as they are.

I just assume the corollary to being a great draft and development team is that you know before all the other teams, who's got it and who doesn't.

I know you're a goalie or former goalie so I respect this opinion even though I disagree. What about UPL gives you hope? I just don't see the reaction time or vision as nearly good enough. He's an enormous goalie that plays small

2 thoughts in regards to upl.

Highly touted long time franchise prospect , still young by nhl goalie standards.

Just win. Literally, play clutch in games when it counts. Upl's shown some of this. Winning %

Just opinions.....

That's the side that raises questions. If they are good at talent assessment, I'd expect some quicker decisions instead of patience with everyone.

Idk if this counts as quick but I think UPL fits that. Josh Bloom as well. Not as big a name but I think (hope) some more of those decisions are coming in the next month or two.

Levi is forcing a UPL decision uncomfortably early for them. Let's see how they handle it.

How many other prospects have done what Quinn, Peterka, and Kulich have done in the AHL at their given points of development and busted?

What have you seen from Quinn and Peterka from day 1 this year right up to the end of the world championships that gives you doubts that either of them can’t fill a top 6 winger role ?

The Peterka-Cozens-Quinn line nearly carried them to the playoffs with their play in March. On the season, they ranked 26th in all of hockey in terms of xGoals% at 54.2% with a minimum of 250 minutes played as a line.

How many players have put up back to back 90+ point seasons in the WHL like Savoie has and busted ? Perhaps a couple, but the odds favour him becoming an impact NHL’er even if he has to go back for his D+2 season and physically mature.

Isak Rosen, also a player that needs to add weight, but was very good down the stretch. A player that can end up in your middle 6 that is good at even strength that can be a weapon on the PP on a cheap deal is underrated.

Krebs did exactly what you could have asked from him in his role, give him better offensive line mates, then you’ll see the points come.

Not sure I’d count those.

Early returns on drafting looks good. But there will be someone who just doesn’t fit what they’re looking for and it will be telling what route they take with them.

I think Savoie quite possibly could be in that camp in 1-2 years from now.

Not saying he’s going to be a bust but he might be a Drouin for Sergachev type of trade candidate
