They can't take a step back. This isn't some ageing team. This is a developing team and the core as a whole took another massive step forward. Stepping back means everyone takes a step back in their development. I'd expect the team defense to rise, the goaltending to rise and maybe the offensive slips a bit. Considering how many career offensive seasons a lot of guys had, replicating that would be insane.

In order for team defense to rise, they need to make a concerted effort not only in personnel but gameplan for that to happen. That alone is going to cause the offense to slip. The year before last, they were a -58 in goal differential. They made that difference up by essentially refusing to play defense at all last year, and they still finished in the red (-4). I'm skeptical of what that translates to in the win column.
