it came to me as i was thinking about washy's question and looking at some stupid islanders trade on capfriendly

Has there ever been a GM to use entire drafts to chase 1 style of player?

as i mentioned last week, i was softening my stance on gibson because of the reasons chad outlines.. getting bombarded by high danger and overuse.

im still not trading for him, but there's the chance he's an average goalie in buffalo.

Buffalo already has their starting goalies for next year. They aren't making a trade.

Adams has said as much.

I just don't need two former Sabres winning the Conn Smythe within 5 years while the Sabres are entering their 13th year without the playoffs.

The Blues won the trade, Vegas won the trade, Florida won the trade (2x - Montour/Skunk), The Flyers lost the trade.

The Sabres might win the trades if you are approaching the NHL as a development league and plan to begin to compete in 2025/26.

Last season showed that personal stats and career seasons for players will not influence that approach, so Tage/Tuch can be used for entertainment until then.

We prob lost those trades for sure at the time. Long term we will be ok. Stings to see those guys do great after they kind of badmouthed or organization. Looks like they were valid badmouthings.

What stinks is adding an Eichel to this team now is exactly what would push us over the top (if we address a D too). Was on the team at the wrong time.

Still excited about the future though

Adams isn't giving up assets for a goalie. Lysowski doesn't just make poop up.

Long term the Sabres have a new core, that alone is refreshing, are they as talented as the previous core is to be determined.

The organization was burned to the ground during covid and Adams and co have rebuilt from the ground up, this is the real difference between the time windows of new core vs old core.

The same problem exists as it did with the old regimes, support players are not in the system and it's still nearly impossible to get players to sign out of free agency.

Adams honeymoon phase was extended due to the play of the team this past season even when management focused on development over winning, the phase is closing by the day during the offseason however.

It's all moot as Adams has free reign with 0 expectations until 25/26 - we can speculate and dream up trade scenarios but there is no reason for Adams to change course and chase players to get better faster.

who's to say we lost the trades? I don't think you can adequately evaluate a trade until you see how all the pieces round out.

The Sabres sent their 'now' players away for futures. Can Isak Rosen, Tage Thompson, Ryan Johnson, Devon Levi, Jiri Kulich, Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, Noah Ostlund, Jordan Greenway and 39OA be as impactful in total as Jack Eichel, Ryan O'Reilly, Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen?

I think yes, if not more so.

I know what Lance said, I more or less believe him regarding not using premium assets on a goalie because of Levi. But not using high end assets is much different than 'assets' or UFA.

There have been others (Dedominicis for one) adamant that the Sabres are not going with Levi/UPL.

The Blues: won the Stanley Cup, Ror won the conn smythe and became their captain - ask anyone not a Sabres fan and you will be told the Sabres got fleeced.

The Panthers - stole Montour - thats an L anyway you want to spin it. Reinhart is a valuable core piece that is in the national spotlight. The Panthers are in the Stanley Cup finals and are making organizational history - that is a W for Florida.

Vegas - Eichel is their high end talent and is thriving in the playoffs where his style of play is now proven to be successful - W for Vegas

Flyers - in full organizational rebuild - that trade was a massive loss for them and a W for Buffalo

Those trades set the Sabres back to rebuild status and are going on year 13 of attempting to make the playoffs, lets all just accept those facts and not use hope and potential as measuring sticks against real winning.
