The word rational is in rationalizing. It's not endless. It has an end. People are trying to make you see reason but all you see is darkness.

Of course it took stones, but it also took opportunity. There were not many teams in the league who had what it took to acquire Eichel. Stone was way cheaper than he should have been - I've always liked his game. Signing Pietrangelo was great.

You go back over time with the team and a lot of it was development from that first draft and season onwards coupled with those other moves. They had their dogs in there - overpayment for Tatar and then overpaying for Pacioretty (including Tatar) - but because they were stocked from that opening draft and moving with those pieces, they weren't as hurt as other teams who have more scarce assets available.

Look what they had to work with to start. They drafted 13D, and of those you could argue 5 were top-4 D.

They were given Tuch to take Haula. They were given Smith to take Marchessault . They were given a 2nd, 4th and Gusev to take Garrison.

They were given Theodore.

They were given a 1st, a 2nd and David Clarkson's contract to take Karlsson.

They were given a 2nd to take Fleury.

They started with 3 1sts in the top 15 (Glass, Brannstrom and Suzuki) as well as with a dearth of young cheap talent from the draft.

Literally no one else in the league was as well situated to make trades and moves as well as Vegas. It's no surprise they've been able to make so many deals. Their top prospects - Brannstrom, Suzuki and Glass - were all cannon fodder from the get go because they didn't need them.
