It's not right when Tampa and Vegas do it because the players aren't injured that bad and they can get more players. Montreal uses the money on a guy who won't come and won't retire so they can add players, but righteous in this instance. |

I regret back reading.....
Yes LTIR and buyouts are a form of cap circumvention, however, no cap during POs changes things. Coming off LTIR should have same effects the whole year, because now you're double dipping, using cap circumvention to get new players due to LTIR AND using lack of cap in PO to AGAIN circumvent cap by adding salary.

Honestly, if the player isn't returning ever (like Price), I don't understand what it changes. Certainly don't see it as an advantage for Montreal who are now without a number 1 goaltender. |

I do find the "oh I'm not officially retired" thing a bit odd but in the end who cares, it's not our money, and other teams shouldn't care either. |

They have 10.5 Million to spend now. They could use that money. Not using it, or failing while doing it doesn't make it any better |

tabarnak...
but yeah they should just have some sort of official retirement clause, to allow this sort of thing instead of hiding it while the player's situation is common knowledge.

What would work is an hybrid between a buyback and a retirement…
When a player is over 1 full season on the LTR and wants to retire before the end of his contract, the team can spread the remaining of the contract maximum over next 10 years and the team keeps the right on the player as long as they are paying the player...
So the team can modulate the payout as per its cap space… So let’s say the team has 15 million in cap space, it can decide to apply that 15 million on the contract payout… Once 100% of the contract is paid, the team is off the hook…. 1/10th of the remaining contract value is the minimum to be paid… with a minimum to make sure the team would not spread 2 millions over 10 years…
And those contracts can’t be traded… |
