2.5M savings at min is good. 3 ELC contracts - manvanfan
To spend on what? Lower level draft picks like Jet Woos and Brisebois because they have very few higher drafts as they continue to trade them away ... or shot in the dark college free agents, none of which have panned out historically for them? |
|
|
|
Yes they can, but they're not even close to making the playoffs. , Asset management is crucial. - PrinceLH
We were six wins away from the playoffs and that was with a terrible first half of an injured Demko and an AHL D core.
Scoring was not an issue. Keeping the puck out of our net was a huge issue. Kudos to this management for taking the first big step needed to fix this team. Now wait and see what step two is.

After watching a lot of the playoffs, the Canucks are very far away from being remotely competitive in the post season. They would have been swept in a humiliating fashion in the 1st round. They have a long ways to go but trading Miller would help accelerate the process. |

You should worry about your own team. They are in a far more desperate position than the Canucks and are trying to sign Matthews for another 8 years. At least the Canucks still have a decent young core - CanuckDon
I mean, the Leafs may not be the ultimate model ... but to compare the Canucks to Leafs is pretty laughable. They could trade one of Marner or Matthews and get a haul that out classes the entire prospect pool of the Canucks in one fell swoop.
... and what is this decent young core you speak of? Did you watch this year's playoffs. These guys don't have the speed or size to play with that pace or physicality. Not that they will make the playoffs soon, but I don't think you want to build around anyone on Vancouver right now ... anyone that wants to stay anyway.

That is what will happen if they try to over-excelerate their retool. They have to get worse to get better. Now wasn't the time for the OEL buyout. - PrinceLH
If you watched him with any regularity, it had to happen. He was horrendous. Couldn't even hide him on a third pair. I was hoping some injury or couldn't pass physical, but obviously that wasn't feasible so ya ... had to happen. |

If you're going to deal with a buyout this big, and for so long, why not just tear it down and start over again? If Vegas can win a Cup in 6 years and Seattle can make it to the playoffs in two, why not just get rid of everyone over 26 year of age recoup draft picks and prospects? Stink for a couple of years and reach the playoffs with players on entry level contracts and bridge deals? I'm sure you could use your current veterans to get you decent younger players that'll be your core in a few years? You're not going anywhere, with your current core. - PrinceLH
Dude Canucks core is not a veteran loaded team. JTM is about the only one that can be sent out. Maybe Kuzmenko. Then everyone else is young or support guys on way out.

I get that but you are probably still thinking of a roster that contains Pizzaman Dries Briesbois Myers OEL.
I think yesterday's move took us from the 10 year to compete level to a five years to compete level depending on who they bring in. I think the fact that they were willing to accept and fix their mistake is a very good first step.
If their answer is to replace OEL with Brisebois then it was a wasted move but you don't clear out that much space and spend a hell of a lot of money to do nothing.

I've seen them. They are scary creatures. The odd one makes it far enough south. I've seen one in the City of Belleville near the railway freight yards. He's usually hunting around daybreak. I sure wouldn't want to meet him, out for a walk early in the morning. They are quite prevalent in the North Bay/Sudbury region. Further north you get the real wolves. I've seen timber-wolves further north in the Arctic watershed, near James Bay. They are gigantic. - PrinceLH

We have just as many playoff wins as the Leafs in the last decade.
We could trade Petey or Hughes and get a big haul.

I know it sounds like I am all wood today over the Canucks and I am certainly not.
I said prior to the playoffs that I have no interest in the playoffs my season begins after the SCF.
Yesterday was the start of my season and now it is wait and see the next move. There has to be at least two more big moves coming so I can't decide whether I like the rest of these moves or not until they happen. |

If that's the case, your team is also pretty crappy. The difference is, the Leafs bottomed out and for 3 years drafted players that were elite in their first years. The Canucks should have sold their veterans and went hard into the draft lottery for a couple of years. |

Our team was pretty crappy with them so what's your point.
You guys really missed the part of BIG HAULS IN RETURN.
Again the Leafs are a terrible example. |

Trading Miller is absolutely in my mind the way to go, but I’d be very surprised if we saw that happen. They wanna be competitive, he helps that. I’d trade him and build around Pettersson and Hughes. |

The contract is fine, he’s worth the dollar, I still thinks he’s a selfish di ckhead though, but that’s another issue. |
