I understand. A lot of fans want instant gratification. It takes years to build a contending team. In today's Cap world it's essential to not waste Cap space. It can be your friend, or it can be your enemy. Choose well at the draft table and you'll be shelling out monster contracts in 3 years. Whoever the Canucks draft this year, if he's a very good player, his entry level contract will end and they'll be forced to pay him in year 4. That just happens to be the last year of the double cap hit. It's going to make it dicey to give the player top dollar. If you force a bridge deal, it'll cost you more by year 6 of this buyout and you'll still be $2.5M in the hole for 2 more years. It's going to hurt this franchise going forward. However, the instant gratification slot machine fans are not going to be satisfied and think this buyout was divine intervention. In reality, it was short sightedness and poor asset management. OEL could have played a couple of more years during the rebuild and there would have been 2 less years of cap issues.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully your team makes it through the 2nd round in the next 19 years.

You seem more worried about it than we are.

I want Vancouver to succeed. They aren't my team but they are a Canadian team of note. I remember seeing their first game, back in 1970. They lost 3 - 1 and I think their first ever goal scorer was Barry Wilkins. It was the first new Canadian team since the great expansion of 1967.

At the very least they got something positive out of those picks. Poor drafting and letting assets walk has resulted in our shallow prospect pool. I'd rather ship a 1st out and be done with OEL forever than to buy into another 8 years of him on the payroll.

Yeah I don't see the positives of the Leafs. They are really no different than us. They are constantly trying to get rid of bad contracts and now make cap room by moving a core player. Their D and goaltending suck. They have as many PO round wins as we do in the last decade and as many cup wins in the last fifty years as we do. They are in cap hell.

I find comparing us to the Leafs is like asking which STD do you like better.

So do I. I'm running out of time to see them win another Cup. I was 9 when they last won it. Pretty bad to know that Canada was not quite 100 years old. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles had not yet been released. Most people only had black and white T.V.'s. The Summer of Love hadn't yet started and neither did Expo '67 in Montreal. I will be 66 in a little over a month. It bothers me that my favourite team has become as dormant as the Chicago Cubs, before they won their World Series Championship in 106 years. We're more than half way to that Hall of Shame.

You can thank the Analytics guru Kyle Dubas for that. He didn't have the ability to draft players with heart and gusto. He was gifted Matthews, Marner, Rielly and Nylander. He's like a dog chasing his tail. Good riddance. Thank you Pittsburgh for taking Clarke Kent to your dreary city.

Cap space is the last thing holding back the Canucks from success, it's ownership and management, this buy out was needed to fix problems caused from shitty management.

Ok but I'd still spend the pick to get out of OEL's contract over the buyout. This is yet another good money chasing bad scenario that puts the team at a competitive disadvantage for another 8 years. Just a horrible decision.

Sounds like Ottawa, Pittsburgh and Buffalo are interested enough to take Myers from us in exchange for a 3rd rd pick or so. Please let it be true.

Aww, you're still a pup compared to some of the geriatrics in here. I worry about my Mom who's a Leaf lifer. She's getting up there and hasn't had much to cheer for since the Gilmour/Clark years. I called her after the 1st round win to congratulate her and the first thing she said was, "Well they're done now."

I'll bet he'd waive to make his full salary elsewhere. The buyout cuts 1/3 off of his pay. If not, let Tocchet deal with it in season. It's not like we're a year or so away from being in contention.

Maybe, but if he's going elsewhere, he gets all of his salary, not 2/3's.

Some team is going to give him two and a half mil. Wait and see.

Probably the Leafs or Flames

I get it! The road to the Cup was there. Boston gone. If they defeat Florida, they probably beat Carolina. That House of Cards was about to implode anyway. Carolina played playoff hockey all season and couldn't elevate their game much higher in the playoffs. They had their issues with the Islanders and the Devils. I honestly though the Rangers would come out of that division. I think they should have not went after so many deadline acquisitions. They had a balanced team but overkill, like bringing in Patrick Kane, destroyed their team chemistry. They didn't appear to have many holes before they made the trades. Devils, pretty much the same.

Thus the term "BIG HAULS IN RETURN".

I mean left on the current roster. Leafs would have solid NHL'ers still, whether you like their mix or not. We would have nothing left to compete with.

Don't get me wrong, I wish we did it. I wish we bottomed out to the point where the worst we could get is 2nd or 3rd overall pick for multiple years. IMHO it's the only solution. But we know it's not something that will happen with this owner.

Yeah, this was the first year in a very long time that the East was wide open. After watching the finals though, I think Vegas wasn't going to be denied no matter who they faced.

Lion-Heart. I have lineage back to 1066 during the Crusades. My ancestors were around when the Magna Carta was signed. I'm the oldest son, of the oldest son in sucession going back almost 1000 years.

Would Miller get more or the same if was a UFA this summer? 💯 he would certainly get a bigger contract this summer. So the contract has value. Full stop. You may dislike the player but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad contract. He can be flipped for assets.

I agree that it’s questionable to sign him as I want the team to rebuild. But we all know that will never happen in our lifetime

- CanuckDon

I disagree. Signing a guy for nothing is different than trading for him. You're comparing costing assets plus contract to just contract.

If you sign him yourself, you negotiate your own terms as well. Length of contract, no-trade clauses, ete. Currently in a trade you'd be asking someone to inherit a couple extra years he probably shouldn't have gotten.

Maybe with such a week FA class he gets as much per year. Hell maybe he even gets 8.5 or 9, but more likely at 5 years.
