Is vanek considered a good coach. He was super talented but quite lazy. Not sure that matches vibes other than the nostalgic ones.
- IndianaSabresFan

If I were to come up with some guesswork opinions, I'd probably rather have guys like Crunch and Weber than Vanek, because of the way they played and worked.

But guys who know Vanek said he worked extremely hard too.

So again. We don't know Richard.

So if NHL teams lose money, how did Ottawa just sell for nearly 1 billion dollars.

Can’t figure that out.

Terry paid what 185 mil 12 years ago?
His investment is up 440%

Something seems off for the cap to only go up 1 mil

It has to do with the escrow that the players owed to the owners due to the lost games/gate revenue during the pandemic. I'm way too dumb to understand the intricacies of that but it seems like the owners have weaponized that agreement to stagnate the cap and keep salaries low

not really weaponized, it was just the agreement in place. players still got paid in loans essentially. now they're paying back the loans. If I'm not mistaken this year is the final year of the 1M rises.

Take a read.

Well, owners held the bag when they lost all that revenue. Now the players do. Nothing is free.

If you want to debate the merits of escrow percentages, I'm not really interested. But in that discussion, "the players getting (frank)ed" is probably more appropriate.

Anything in there about PPP loans? I don't have a subscription. Just curious if NHL teams got in on that

Another question that can be asked is, shouldn't the owners just stop being cheap? Pay out the x-millions to set the balance?

I guess. But we all know that's not how the world works.

Yes 17 of them pulled PPP loans and then lobbied against the government for loan forgiveness after their PPP loans were forgiven.

In all seriousness, no.

A memorandum of understanding in the current collective bargaining agreement dictates that the cap can only go up 5 percent in any one year, so if it does go up $1 million for next season, this is how it could increase from there:

2022-23: $82.5 million
2023-24: $83.5 million
2024-25: $87.7 million
2025-26: $92.1 million

It's a pretty sweet deal for the owners. They're way ahead vs inflation

Well, no, everyone took a hit during the pandemic. The owners completely lost ticket sales. Something had to give and that's the agreement that they came to.

Why would the owners pay the players debts? Just to then fork out more cash for their higher salaries?

Cap going up doesn't make them more money. It takes out of their pockets. Tis a business

The agreement is dodo but I really hate discussion on CBA.

Didn’t every team just make like 30 million from the Seattle expansion?

Seems like the owners (like baseball) cry poor when that’s not really the case anymore.

The NHL needs a serious business overhaul.

It has the worst contractual, RFA, UFA and trade market of all Leagues.

I like the soft cap idea.

Soft cap ceiling. For every mil over you pay 1.5 back to the pot.

Or for put it into buckets.
1-5 mil over 1x
5-10 over 1.5x
Over 10 over 2c

If TML want to go 15 mil over. They pay back 30.

that would kill the small market teams

3 contract buy outs per 5 years, no cap penalties

seems more in the middle
