Does anyone get angry if we draft musty at 13?
- TheSabresTaco

I'll never look at a pick with as much confusion as I did Quinn. And now he's on the back of my Goat Head. So, no. I'll be cheering em on every step whomever we choose.

Until they're 28 falling over themselves on the ice, looking more like a zamboni than an actual player

At pick 13 you arent going to get someone with a rounded out game (already). Those guys are going top 10.

Its easier for them to develop that part of musty's game than it is to teach him the raw talent he would need to succeed in the NHL. But this is true for a handful of players in that range, including Morin.

- Michael Ghofrani

Barlow might be that guy though. IMO he looks to be the most rounded player at the moment. We'll see where he lands

Nhle is the biggest grift in the analytical universe.

I like it as part of the equation, but shouldn’t be more then just something that confirms prior beliefs of a player

using it as a tool for confirmation bias defeats its purpose. Its supposed to yield new information, what the scouts missed. Not confirm what the scouts saw.

If it is used like this then it is really wasted. What if it doesn't mesh with the eye test? By your logic it would just be tossed aside.

I think the middle ground (and probably where most good organizations end up) is that if the scouts and the nerds don't agree, there is an analysis that is done to see why. I've spent the last 6 months getting my certifications in microsoft machine learning and AI. The one big thing that I've learned is that you can always get data back from any model that you build. The better teams have learned how to build the best models.

That said, I think scouting will become less and less important in the coming years.

If your great uncle Jack helped you off an Elephant, would help your Great Uncle jack off an Elephant?

Enroth was such a good backup tho. I 'member talking with me grandpa about him being the next big Buffalo goalie :') thems the days.

- DirtyDan

He helped me help an elephant make love to a dolphin’s blow-hole with it’s trunk and then I watched while perched on the worn down horn of the last Northern white rhinoceros, assless chaps with a cape and a studded choker cheering “peanuts, peanuts, tootsie rolls and blow pops, anything is a dildo if you try hard enough”

Ivory dreams on the Ivory Coast, in Côte d'Ivoire. I’ve never felt more like a woman, except for that summer when I was 16 and my hymen burst on the back of that horse, but it would be years before my back got blown out proper at a sorority pledge in a house owned by Washedup but I digress.

I think scouting will still have a place in the league because in the end we're talking about 18 year olds and that requires a lot of context with the analysis. The way teams scout definitely has to change though.

Cant pay a guy 300k a year, send him to Russia, and report back with "Skates well, I like the cut of his jib" Which half the league still does. That info does nothing for me.

I think we'll start seeing a psychological component phased in. Development goes a long way to helping a teams draft success rate and this is still an underused area for evaluation.

I think a lot of scouts are still coming back with "hes a good kid, listens to his coach, they love him" and the opposite. This is also more or less useless.

I'm the family used car salesman.....

Embrace girgensons, it's easier to deal with.

You wouldnt be happy for him and kyle to lead this team to the playoffs? Those guys have soldiered thru so many bad coaches, plans ect...

Top 3 gm finalist as well if the Sabres make the playoffs.

Using Quentin Musty as an example.

Pros:

Pedigree- was #1 overall pick in OHL draft.

Points per game- checks out with other recent top 10 picks

Prototypical size

Good shot by NHL standards, good playmaker on tape as evident by multiple passes to high danger areas through sticks.

Cons:

Skating
Play away from the puck

In summary: Taking NHLe into effect we confirm as a late birthdate his point totals may look like “X and Y” depending on the model you’re back testing given his production in the OHL.

I’d be more interested in knowing also, was he driving the line ? Or was it David Goyette ?

John and Mary’s can get fvcked but I was traumatized by the one in Arcade growing up so there’s no hope for them in my eyes.

right, and all of those things are measurables. That's part of what makes up a model - what are the data points (features), and what are they worth?

Good drafting teams have already figured out the secret sauce for this. You can teach certain aspects like skating, systems, shooting, etc...and those can improve over time. Teaching a kid to want "it" more that the other and doing what it takes to get there...nope.

Sabres Marketing should take the lead now...Plan the Thank You Zemgus night, Thank You Kyle night for the last two games of the season...hopefully they play home those two games, if not...oh well.

He's quiet and kinda to himself, not sure anyone mentioned whether or not he was "cool".
His wife does most of the talking. She's vibrant.

Just show up and work. He works hard, without all the skill of the star players. Blue collar guy.

Girgensons hasnt shorted me a penny on my season tickets.
