Bring it on…make it a good day. - IonSabres
Why did they need to bring both Girgensons and Okposo back at this particular time. With the draft and FA coming wouldn't you want a little wiggle room contract wise. I mean and I hope I am wrong, but that tells me your basically running it back and you knew that already. |

I am not completely sure that I follow. i would think that our window should be at least 5 years, if not more. They've set their cap beautifully and made several great signings of their own players. People laugh at the statements about the cap x years from now, but it freaking matters. Look at all of the teams that run out of proverbial gas because they ran out of assets. When you look at it a different way, it really is kind of amazing what they've done in 2 years. They built a fantastic young team and completely re-stocked the cupboard. And on top of it, the cap is fantastic and allows them all kinds of flexibility for years to come. Hell, it might even come this week. If Adams doesn't go out and get a 4D by opening night, I will be the first in line to criticize him. The season ended a week ago. - Slump Buster
Window of what?
Being a team that makes the playoffs and does little to no damage there?
A team that consistently makes the playoffs and wins a round or two every year, but that's their ceiling?
A team that is consistently one of the top 5 to 10 teams in the league? |

Well I can say I am happy with the growth of the young core. But tired of the same Groundhog Day crap and basically running it back. Yes it's early in the offseason so there is hope. Tired of the lip service and the excuses. Need to see them make the playoffs this year, I mean I Love Hockey. Watching it, playing it, but I think I am done with this team if they don't. In no way or form or shape should it have taken this long to make the playoffs or even to be competitive. - Buff36

It matters if it actually means they are going to spend to it and the savings from player x leads to them being able to keep or acquire player Y.
We’ve come no where close to that bridge yet so yes, I think it’s hilarious to celebrate the salary cap as any sort of victory here - sbroads24

You wanted a "Hopkins" for the 4th line?
It's incredible to me people are complaining on here about (frank)ing 4th line players.
What exactly do people want them to do up front to the 3rd highest scoring group in the league? Yeah, they're going to "run it back" with this forward group, and why the hell not? And for those that say they all had career years, are they all going to all repeat their numbers? No. But, Quinn and JJ and possibly Cozens should put up better numbers. Dahlin and Power, too. And why can't Thompson flirt with 40-50 every year? We ARE allowed to have superstars, too, not just other teams.
He's going to bring in a top 4 D. That's a given and it's no secret and that's the biggest area of need. I don't see an issue with how he's building this. |

Idea.
Go get an exceptional top 6 forward and bump everyone down a line is a thought.
Not sure they have the ability to do that now unless moving out a few forwards.

See that's it, people don't seem to get that the Sabres pretty much locked themselves into a contract for contract deal. A lot of teams aren't or can't take back a contract. Not much flexibility unless you move out a few. |

I'd like to go through a little exercise. I've got pizza gut so thankfully we can do this sitting down.
Let's pretend the Sabres trade Victor Olofsson for Tyler Toffoli. Way I see it, realistically, the Sabres probably don't want a player in that spot, definitively, past this season.
How would you feel about acquiring a true top 6, short term forward to fill the gap for the year? Or, should they be trading for, I don't know, Alex Iafallo. Two years left. Think Toffoli is the better impact but the term goes with Buffalo Boi.
Would a move of this nature satisfy both the 'don't block the kids' people and the 'try to (frank)ing win something now pls' people?
Also, is this scenario (1-2 year vet) the most realistic? |

My answer would be extremely simple
Is Toffoli an improvement over Oloffson? Yes
Is Toffoli probably better right now than a rookie Kulich or Rosen? Yes
Does it help us win games? Yes
SO , Yes |

That is sooooo short-sighted. No, there is no trophy for having a good cap. But do you really think that it is Adams decision to take on more money to get more assets? That decision comes from above.

The irony in all of this is that they have done such a good job in the last 2 years setting us up that now people are wondering why they haven't already done all of their summer shopping.
Haven't we learned that this sport is not transactional? Example: the last two offseasons, people here complained that there wouldn't be enough scoring because of what walked out the door. We lost player x, we need to get player y to compensate. It doesn't work that way.
Also, at what point would you have started your transactional approach? Two years ago? Sure, we could have dumped Mitts, Tallness, etc for players that were better than them at that time. Would that have been trying to win then? Sure. Would it have been a good idea. Nope. That's the irony in all of this: they stayed the course and did such a good job growing their assets that now people are now criticizing them for not hitting the gas a week after the offseason has started. Amazing stuff.

I don't get this line of thinking at all. Unlike most teams, we have a list of potential players for next year. We aren't a team like the Bruins or Tampa where we need to fill out a roster with no money. But in what world does that mean that we have to have those players opening night? We aren't locked into anything. I can't fathom how that is a bad thing.
Now is their plan to have 95% of those players on opening night? Sure. Are they locked into them? No way.

So then who really cares about it?
It legitimately has not mattered at all, and won’t for years.
It absolutely keeps being purported as some sort of victory by Adams.
For some reason with this team and GM people love to put the cart before the horse. Talk about it when it matters. |

I would be fine with either really. I just want to get in the playoffs. Unlike other posters here, I could give a shat less if we get swept in the first round, I just want IN . I would rather be in the playoffs and get bounced, than on the outside looking in...

Cart before the horse? He has grown a team that is now ready to compete. The window is opening. Even if we don't make any moves beyond 4D, this team should make the playoffs this year (side note: owners and gm's making public statements about this stuff is just stuff for fans to eat up). He doesn't *need* to go out and find a top line or any nonsense like that. Its still percolating and growing. There aren't any glaring holes. And as we move into this window he has a ton of options.
And again, what results in the window shutting? Running out of assets. I am a (self-hating) Yankees fan. I could not be more jealous of what I see Baltimore doing this year. They are absolutely loaded and will be fantastic for years to come. The Sabres are in the same boat.

They have 22 contracts signed right know. With the Draft and FA coming it does not leave much flexibility to make moves for this year. I don't care about next year. |

This move would indicate improvement, it intrigues the try to win now group while inflating the rage of the blocking the youth group.
The player would have to provide serious impact as the last attempt at this was a disaster - by this management when they acquired Taylor Hall.
