Love the Winnipeg proposal !! Don’t like the Vladar part but it would be worth it to make that move all day long !!!!

So he won't re-sign in Calgary but he will in Winnipeg?

Yeah I don't think the Jets would touch that unless they had the extension inked.

Thanks Trevor.

I am hoping the news that Lindholm is interested in an extension is just a PR stunt by Lindholm's agent.

If they trade a Hanafin, they will need to get a Hanafin in return. If not, that leaves a massive hole in the top 4.

With the way things have played out, it makes so much sense for Calgary to trade all their RFA's for maximum return and do a retool. The Flames are a bubble team at best. They cannot compete with the top dogs in the West.

Patching holes and hoping for playoffs every year is not a plan for success any more than getting drunk and hitting on every chick in the bar is a plan for success. You might get some wins....but they are not wins you will want to remember.

I really hope Conroy can make Edwards see this.

I can see Hanafin going to St. Louis. As much as I like the Winnipeg proposal, I think Hanafin wants to in Winnipeg as much as Schiefle would want to be stay Calgary.

But anything is possible with a huge overpayment.

The Blues have 3D men at 6.5 with term and all have NMC’s another (Leddy) at 4 mil NTC. The organization has no center depth, with the 10th pick they are going to get either Dvorsky or Moore.

I think a fair trade could be Dallas1st rd (29) Colton Parayko for Hanifin. Unfortunately Parayko would block.

Thanks for this fun and informative piece Trevor!
Add durability to the PROS list for Hani.... the guy has only missed 22 games in 8 seasons. Chychrun has missed 152 games in 7 seasons!

Hanifin (sign and trade 8 x 7mil) and pick 48 to Buffalo for picks 13, 35 and 39

Hanifin (sign and trade 8 x 7mil), and pick 48 to Det for picks 9, 42 and 43

Either move would free up 7.15 in CAP space to move in Wolf and sign a UFA D man to take some of Hani's minutes.

Maybe change the 2023 2nd to a 2023 1st & then your in the talks. Flames can do better than that.

That’s a great point! I think all of those offers are very reasonable as well!

Great info as always Trevor.

I always ask the question ... can we win with this guy?

The reality with Hanifin is he is a talent whose game lacks physicality resulting in the cons in his game that Trevor mentioned.

The Winnipeg deal seems like pie in the sky, but the premise that the team that gets the best player wins, would make that a no brainer.

Lets get as high a draft pick as we can get for Hanifin, free up the cap space, turn some of our RFA's into prospects, and start the REBUILD.

Is he agreeing to an extension with his new team?

Seems like a fairly important factor in the return you'd get.

We cant extend him until July, so chicken egg kinda thing. I would imagine GM's in these scenarios ask to talk to his agent to get a feel what Noah is looking for on an extension & any issues with destination. We can get a 1st, 2nd & good prospect at the TDL as a rental. Not going to take a low ball at this point with no 1st in the deal.

Exactly. Convoy’s got to hit a home run with Hanifin. Too many others already have.

I don’t see the Winnipeg trade working. If Hanifin won’t sign here, why would he sign in Winterpeg?

There has to be a 1st attached to any deal involving NH.

This team badly needs to trade away most of the UFA’s, there’s no chance we’re more than a bubble team at this point.

Lindholm needs to be traded for more picks, should get another 1st back +++

We’re stuck with Kadri and Huberdeau but lots of teams have crappy contracts and are still able to get past that.

Tanev and Toffoli at the trade deadline should bring back so great assets. Teams are stupid when it comes to that time of year.

Hey K-Man, kinda reminds me of Hey-Man on Rock of Ages movie lol.
Personally, I am cringing at the thought of signing Lindholm to an 8 year 9.0 mill deal which is what its probably going to take. I would say the Barzal deal is way more of a better comparable than even Horvat's. I get it though. He's our #1 centre & a rock solid player.

Hanafin should go & I feel we can replace him a lot easier than any 1C.
Tofolli & Tanev & even Backlund we can go into the season with & get a solid return at the trade deadline. But if Tofolli or Backlund can get you a later 1st & maybe a 3rd or 4th, Conroy should pull that trigger. If you have a core of Lindholm, Huberdeau, Kadri, Andersson, Weegar & Markstrom, that is enough to get young guys like Pelts, Coronato, Duehr & Wolf integrated & still maybe sneak into playoffs. If we can score 2 or 3 extra 1st rounders in the next 2 years, its a mini rebuild. To me that is a no brainer. Hanafin absolutely will get us an extra 2023 1st +. Gotta do it. Will hurt our D strength/depth but if Marky doesnt get back to Vezina like goaltending, as we just saw last year, wont mean jack sh!t. I think we should extend Zadarov for 3-4 years & give him his 4.5-5.0 mill per. Watching these playoffs, you need a menacing D to punish their players back there. He plays great on the 3rd pairing & can easily move up to 2nd pairing in case of injuries. We should keep him. Backlund Im torn. Im a huge fan of his, if you have ever met him, he is such a classy guy. He wants to win & I think it was insulting Sutter didnt give him the C. Give him a 2 year extension at around 4.0mill & the C & he can be a 2/3 centre for the Flames that wouldnt hurt us.
I would not trade Vladar at this point. I would run 3 goalies & move Wolf up & down with our Wranglers & be sure to get the kid at least 10 NHL starts. Then next year, decide, if Markstrom rebounds big time, which good goalies do, we are in a way different position & can make a much more informed decision this time next year.
Just my humble observations & thoughts.

I’m torn on Lindholm, last thing we need is another 8 year retirement deal. Flames with or without Lindholm are still a bubble team. With Vegas, Edmonton, LA, and I’d even include Seattle, Flames are in tight to even make the playoffs. Now is a perfect opportunity to pick up some extra picks and restock the prospect pool. Lindholm would get us a first, and another pick or prospect. I’m all for moving out Tanev and Toffoli at the tdl, not sure Backlund will even want to stay. Conroy needs to take advantage of this and make it a quick turnaround like what LA has done. Worse thing that could happen is we do nothing and flounder in and out of a playoff position for the year, making it hard to trade anyone.
As far as Zadorov, I agree, resign him. Flames can’t afford to get any softer, pretty soon even the Canucks will be slapping us around.

Anderson for captain!

So what’s the chance Huberdeau bounces back to a 90-100 point player next year and becomes a hot commodity?
Huberdeau 20% retained to Montreal for Calgary’s 1st rounder back and the rights to Sean Monahan?
Thanks Brad.

If the Flames are going into a rebuild, if my name is Craig Conroy I would tell both Hubs and Kadri that if they want to go chase a cup, they need to play up to their contracts. If not, well, that brings me to a quick question.

Can Huberdeau get buried in the AHL? I know his salary cannot. But can the player?

Asking for Darryl Sutter.

If you lose Hanafin, does Lindholm want to be here? He said he wants to chase a cup. Calgary's top 4 are looking pretty thin without Hanafin.

Lindholm ain't taking the hometown discount. He has had one of the best contracts in the league for the last 4-5 years. He is going to get paid. I don't think its in the Flames best interest to overpay him.

Yes, Anderson for Captain!

As long as your ready to wait 3-4 years to have a shot at some real noise , I still think this team with a few tweeks and that’s all bottom 6 can do some damage if everyone has average years !! It was too many bad years for the couple good and the rest well below their average

To have a real shot I’d wait that long. We lost our superstars and the only way we’re getting any back is through the draft.
If Markstrom doesn’t rebound, we’ll be out in the first round, getting a little tired of that.
I agree with Kevin R, keep Vladar, he’s really needs a legit chance before we trade him. With so many goalies on the market, we wouldn’t get a big enough return.
