If that’s the case is it even a good idea for us to move Petry? I’d love to shed salary here but how hard is 2RD to replace? I’m guessing very.
- Victoro311

Petry ain’t the salary to shed imo. He provides fair value for his production. He was also hurt like what 10-15 games last year?

He’s old and he thinks he can still pinch. I would prefer to go younger…

I think I agree. The right move was to never swap out Marino for Petry but we don’t get a mulligan on that and I’m not sure how we can do better at RD right now.

Dumping Petry to me only makes sense if you just go cheap on D and load up the forward group more

Example:

Petts - Letang
POJ - Rutta
Smith - Ruh/Friedman

Not much point in dumping Petry and magically hoping you can get Dumba or Mayfield at 5m per.

- Feds91Stammer

Yeah I’m not doing Rutta at 2RD with nothing but a 7th defenseman on deck behind. I’d keep Petry absolutely if that’s the alternative.

I bet if Marino played on the Pens last year everyone wouldn’t be so enamored with him.

If you're saying people undervalued him while he was here, I agree. His game was pretty vanilla, but a young RD that can handle a lot of minutes is pretty important.

I’m saying there’s a big difference playing for the devils last season and playing for the pens.

Well Petry is forced to pinch at all costs every time because “play with speed”. Marino gets to use discretion.

Dude... show me 5 teams with a better RD group than we have. Not saying we can't improve or make changes but RD and the top line are the only two areas I think we don't NEED to address.

The pens might not even be a top 5 RD group in their own division…

Of the 6 dmen the Devils used the most in regular season, and playoffs, Marino is 5th or 6th in all the underlying stats of that group...so he was arguably their worst defenseman. HOWEVER, and I capitalize because its a big one, all of his stats are basically better than any of the Pens D-man stats except Ty Smith..who only played like 9 games...so worst Devils d-man relative to what though? Relative to extremely good underlying numbers, so good in fact, that his are great too...even though they're mostly the worst of that group hahah

Raw production standpoint: Marino 18 points in 64 games....Petry was 31 points in 61 games...and hit 3x the amount.

Not that I've ever had the thought that the Pens had the best RD group at all but your comment got me to thinking. Who you putting as the best in the league?

I wouldn't go that far. I think Letang while still pretty good is slipping from being a #1 defenseman and Petry is a solid 4, 3 at a stretch, who does add some needed size to our top 4.

Really?

The Devils last year with Severson, yes. This year, we will see.

The Canes are a toss up to me. Are Pesce and Burns a better 1-2 than Letang and Petry? I'd say it is pretty close but add Rutta as the 3rd D and I'll take the Pens.

The Islanders have Pullock, Dobson and Mayfield. I like our guys better but I think you could make the case either way.

Rangers, Flyers & Caps... poop, poop, poop. Now, to my point, look at our LD compared to everyone else. We might have a top 5 worst left side D as it stands now.

Devils, Isles, Canes, Rags, and BJs are at the very least on par with the Pens.

The list for players walking from Calgary after this season is now Hanafin, Backlund, Toffoli and Lindholm. Thats 4/5ths of a good top 6 line right there.

Hanafin, Lindolm and Backlund would be ideal fits for us. I don't want to spend on rentals, wonder if Hanafin would do a sign and trade with us?

Not sure we have what they need but it really makes things interesting. The more players on the market the better opportunity to improve for Dubas. If I'm Calgary, POJ is really the only attractive asset we have other than our picks. We don't have many players with term (that are good) that don't have some level of trade protection.

Just noticed something interesting with Pettersson... he has a modified NTC that kicks in on July 1st. He can have a list of 8 teams he can't be traded to after that. I feel like if they were going to use him in a trade to upgrade our LD, it will likely happen in the next week.

(frank) it. Trade petry and offer sheet Evan Bouchard to a long term contract instead of the bridge Edmonton is going to offer him.

Boom.

That’s nice but Bouchard would have to agree to come to PIT

Hanafin playing forward now?....2.5 forwards per forward line these days?
