Quick Summary
Reg: J. Doucet (01:29 2nd) , K. Runke (02:23 2nd) , D. McCabe (01:13 3rd) , E. Houk (02:23 3rd) , J. Borysiuk (17:48 3rd)
Man: none
Goal: Man: Thornton (31 shots, 26 saves); Reg: Evanoff (31 shots, 31 saves)

Afternoon games often tend to be absurd, and this one was just that. Here’s how they lined up:

Regina
Goal
30 Evanoff (35 Meger)

Defence
28 Christian - 4 Reimer
3 McCabe - 7 Sass
16 Schmidt - 2 King-Cunningham
32 Third

Forwards
29 Doucet - 27 Barlage - 8 Brook
17 Barnstable - 14 Culling - 12 Houk

9 Shindle - 23 Pearce - 11 Runke
22 Asham-Moroz - 21 Borysiuk

Scratches
G 31 Anders
D 20 Holoien
F 10 Davis - 18 Whyte - 19 Bjorklund

Manitoba
Goal
30 Thornton - (34 Hawryluk)

Defence
16 Hartje - 8 Toth
24 Wareham - 4 Malchuk
5 Casey - 25 Calder

Forwards
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab
10 Paulhus - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter

Scratches
G 1 Harkness - 35 Murphy
D 6 Fry - 27 Gottfried
F 23 Fawkes - 26 Boucher - 29 King

On paper, this was a much stronger Bison lineup than the one on Friday night. The shots ended at 31-31, which was a fair indication of the play. A pair of quick goals early in the 2nd gave Regina the cushion they needed. The same thing happened in the 3rd, with goals at almost identical times.

The Bisons finish the pre-season at 1-3-0 and Regina is even-Steven at 3-3-0.

This looks like a more normal score than Saturday’s whitewash. The T-irds finish the pre-season at 5-0-0, with a light strength of schedule.

Holy Trinity goes 3-0-0 on the weekend, with none of these games showing up on their schedule. They are 4-2-0 on the pre-season, but 0-2-0 against CW teams (i.e., UBC).

With two of the CW’s four opening series starting on Thursday night I had one less day to do a thorough roster examination of all teams. So that will have to wait.

Neither the Bisons nor Banjo-Mutts tore up the league in the pre-season. However, Sask played Regina, Calgary, and Alberta and the Bisons played Briercrest, Regina, and Lakehead. None of Sask’s games were uploaded to LeagueStat.

The last time these played was last November and both games were tightly contested with each side picking up a win.

I am annoyed that the Bisons are having to play Friday afternoon due to a Bomber game at the stadium. Why not Saturday/Sunday? That’s what normally has happened.

This series goes Thursday in the Town of Bedrock and Friday up in Edmontown. The Dinos had by far the most impressive pre-season in the CW. Since they finished first last year, they have to be big favourites here. The Mythical Mutants had to cancel one pre-season game due to injuries. So they might not be at their best for this series.

Neither team has posted a new story on their website just yet. I want a chance to take a good look at the Bluegars’ new roster, since they were slated to lose some top talent. The Banjo-Cats look like your basic Regina team from what I have seen thus far.

This Friday night/Saturday afternoon series has the best potential of this opening weekend. The Evil Monkeys pulled off a sweep of Sask to raise their pre-season record to .500. So it is hard to say just what to expect of them. The T-irds’ record may not e as impressive as it looks. They played the SFU Globetrotters, Holy Trinity, and NAIT.

Quick Summary
Sask: J. Pillar (08:50 1st) , C. Stebbings (12:42 1st) , C. Stebbings (01:51 2nd) , D. Holt (04:15 2nd) , R. Pelletier (17:02 2nd) , T. Prefontaine (18:59 2nd)
Man: C. Hartje (06:34 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Kooy (25 shots, 24 saves); Man: Harkness (28 shots, 22 saves), Thornton (19 shots, 19 saves)

On a positive note, the Bisons won the 3rd period after a goaltending switch. Here’s how they lined up:

Manitoba:
Goal:
1 Harkness - 30 Thornton

Defence:
16 Hartje - 27 Gottfried
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
25 Calder - 24 Wareham

Forwards:
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 19 Arpin - 11 Ostir
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab
10 Paulhus - 29 King - 26 Boucher

Scratches:
G 34 Hawryluk
D 5 Fry - 36 Casey
F 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter - 23 Fawkes

Saskatchewan:
Goal:
30 Kooy (31 Ross)

Defence:
28 Kinniburgh - 7 Collins
9 Prefontaine - 14 Gavias
2 Jordan - 21 Jaquet

Forwards:
18 Loschiavo - 27 Pelletier - 12 Ball
25 Kaluski - 19 Pillar - 16 Holt
11 Petruic - 23 Tkachuk - 15 Stebbings
17 Rumsey - 20 Sorensen (10 Keeler)

Scratches:
G 32 Hobbs
D 4 Bortis - 6 Rinehart - 22 Gross
F 5 Faith - 8 Saleski - 13 Jacobson - 26 Hayes

Sask’s #10 Keeler was injured early, colliding with the boards on a foiled scoring opportunity. I put down the lines post-injury.

Since it is getting late on a weeknight (a rare time for a Bison game), I cannot go over all the scores. To start with there was may more contact in this game than the last weekend’s two exhibitions combined. However, a few Bison problems resurfaced: one, they can dominate territory for long stretches and not get shots on goal and two, the goaltending remains off-and-on.

There was a stretch in the 2nd period where the Bisons appeared to have all four lines rolling, then came a soft backhand goal from the face-off circle.

In any event, Thornton looks like the best bet in the nets. A lot hinges on him finding what it takes to be a starting CW goaltender.

The rematch goes Friday at 2:30 p.m., which is sooooo stupid. If you don’t have CanadaWest.tv, the Sask story says that HuskieFan.ca will have live audio. The link is above.

Despite the one-side shot clock, it took a late 3rd period goal to give the Dinos the GWG. I saw the last 7 minutes after getting home from the Bison game. Mac seldom crossed centre ice with the puck in that time

Quick Summary
Sask: R. Pelletier (11:46 2nd) , J. Ball (14:09 2nd) , C. Jaquet (14:35 2nd)
Man: T. Apetagon (16:41 1st) , J. Hooker (16:06 2nd)
Goal: Sask: Ross (23 shots, 21 saves); Man: Thornton (42 shots, 39 saves)

I was watching on CanadaWest.tv from work so I was unable to make notes. There were a few line-up changes. The Bisons switched Casey for Calder on defence, and in goal Thornton started and Hawryluk was the backup. The Banjo-Mutts subbed in Faith and Hayes, and scratched Keeler and Tkachuk from the Thursday line-up. In their net, Ross started and Kooy backed-up.

Thornton looked strong in goal. In four periods, he has 58 saves on 61 shots, a .951 S% and a 2.25 GAA.

The powerplays were the key to the game. Tony Apetagon (being used on the point on the PP this year) opened scoring with a point shot. Captain Hooker scored the final goal during a 2nd period PP. In between, the Mutts scored thrice, including two just 26 seconds apart during a 4-minute PP of their own.

The Bisons have a bye week next, but have a full slate of challenging non-conference games. The host the Manitoba Moose on Thursday, visit UND on Saturday, then visit the Moose on Monday afternoon. They will then have back-to-back road trips (to UBC and MacEwan) before playing MRU at home on October 27th and 28th.

Believe it or not, but this was a 2-1 game after two periods. Bedrock U had 6 goals on 24 shots in the 3rd period. The Dinos were 5-for-13 on the PP, while the Griffins were 0-for-3.

With a lot of game overlap, and the Jets, Bombers, and Blue Jays all on TV, this game evaded my radar. Despite some key losses from last year’s roster, it seems the Bluegars still have a decent enough line-up.

The advantage of a late game in the Pacific time zone is that I can always see a large percentage of it. As such I could bear witness to the T-irds completely dominating the Evil Monkeys. The SOG were a bit deceptive in that regard.

MRU: T. Gould (01:21 1st) , R. Holmes (17:38 1st) , R. Holmes (04:32 2nd) , R. Aquilon (17:34 2nd) , C. Blake (00:28 1st OT)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (32 shots, 27 saves), MRU: Farkas (19 shots, 15 saves)

I was able to catch a fair bit of this game. The Bluegars held a 4-2 lead entering the 3rd but allowed the Banjo-Cats to get back in the game, and tie it up with just a fraction of a second remaining. However, the Bluegars recovered and won it in less than 30 seconds of overtime. In a twist, Regina scored on both of their 3rd period shots to get the point, and MRU scored on their only shot of overtime. Those stats may not be accurate. They said Regina had 6 shots in overtime, and there just wasn’t the time.

UBC: B. Kotylak (12:35 1st) , S. Huo (06:27 2nd) , R. Pouliot (09:55 3rd) , J. Smart (17:06 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (25 shots, 22 saves), UBC: Lane (24 shots, 22 saves)

I did not see too much of this game, but UBC was ahead all night. It was a 3-1 game late, then UBC got an empty-netter and the Evil Monkeys got a PP goal to improve the look of the scoreboard. So, is UBC that good? Or has Alberta taken a step back? The Monkeys were 4-4-0 in pre-season, against good teams, and UBC was 5-0-0, against Holy Trinity, BCIHL, and ACAC teams.

This is a funny bye weekend for the Bisons, with three games spread over five days. These could also be their toughest opponents of the season. The Moose have a lot of blue-chip prospects and players with NHL experience already assigned to camp. The UND team is, as usual, very highly ranked in the Excited States. The USCHO poll has them at 7th. There could be more preview stories about that game coming up.

It does not look like the Bisons are uploading stats to LeagueStat for either game. FWIW, the Bisons are 2-4-0 against the Moose in past games. In recent years they had a scrimmage or two where no scores were reported.

Quick Summary
Moose: C. Lucius (17:27 1st) , C. Golder (11:46 2nd) , W. Bongiovanni (14:33 2nd) , C. Conrad (03:48 3rd) , N. Chibrikov (07:54 3rd)
Man: P. Malchuk (16:24 3rd)
Goal: Moose: Milic (12 shots, 11 saves), Bisons: Thornton (57 shots, 52 saves)

The Moose dressed a few Manitoba boys in their line-up tonight. Here are the links to their Elite Prospects pages:
- Colt Conrad
- Dawson Barteaux
- Keaton Jameson - former Bison
- Mark Liwiski
- Stelio Mattheos

The live links were not uploaded (at least to my notice) until after I got home from the game.

The first star (by a LOT) was Bison goaltender Kolby Thornton. In the 1st period he faced 23 shots and surrendered just one goal. That one was by 1st round draft choice Chaz Lucius who was gifted a turnover in the left-wing face-off circle and picked a corner.

In the 2nd period, Carson Golder made it 2-0 on a break-out from the Moose end up the entire length of the ice, and converted a pass from Danny Katic. Wyatt Bongiovanni made it 3-0 after a period of sustained pressure.

The best goal of the night was converted by Colt Conrad on a pass from Thomas Caron, making it 4-0 in the 3rd. Nikita Chibrikov made it 5-0 on a powerplay. The Bisons replied on a powerplay of their own, with defenceman Parker Malchuk pinching in from the point.

So, on to the Excited States to face the UND Flickertails/Fighting Sioux/Fighting Hawks on Saturday night. The re-match with the Moose goes Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Iceplex.

The Family Guys hit the road after a pre-season and week #1 where they played home-and-home series within Saudi Alberta. Will there finally be a series split in this CW season? I would suspect that the Banjo-Mutts will be heavily favoured here.

The Evil Monkeys looked lesser than their usual banana-throwing selves last weekend. The Bluegars have lost some top tier talent from last year’s roster. There may not be room for both of these teams in the CW upper echelons this year.

The T-irds had a weak pre-season schedule, but sure looked good against the Evil Monkeys. If they’re as good as I think they might be, they need to put the boots to the Banjo-Cats on the road. Like they did on home ice in last year’s quarter-finals.

Goal: MRU: Farkas (25 shots, 22 saves); Alta: Berlin (30 shots, 26 saves)

I got in late in the 2nd period and, since all four games started at 8:00 CDT, I had to stick with just the one. I picked this one. It was a good choice. The rest were blow-outs, and this was a comeback OTW for the Bluegars. The good news for the Evil Monkeys is that they now have a point in the standings. The Bluegars are 3-0-0, with two OTWs in that total. The rematch is in Cowtown on Saturday.

Bedrock U has 3 straight wins this year, and 26 straight in conference play. They also hold the record for consecutive U-Cup losses, with 12! Their last U-Cup win was a round-robin win over Brandon in 1981. Holy Trinity at least made it respectable. The last Dino goal was an empty-netter.

The loss drops Alberta to 0-3-0, while MRU improves to 3-0-0. It marks the first time since the 1929/30 season the Bears have started conference play with three-straight losses. The Bears started 1929/30 0-4-0 on the season, with teams only playing two games against each other and the conference, at that time, was composed of just Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Goal: UBC: Lane (24 shots, 23 saves), Reg: Evanoff L (16 shots, 11 saves), Meger (14 shots, 11 saves)

I missed posting the quick summary last night, so here it is. Some dubious golatending numbers for the Banjo-Cats.

I was listening on-line to the radio broadcast. It was 2-0 when I left to pick up some Chinese Food, and 7-0 when I returned. It was 0-0 after the 1st, and 7-0 after the 2nd. The goaltending of Kolby Thornton held the game scoreless for 20 minutes.

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 5
MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 2

➤ MRU: MHKY: Cougars lose 5 - 2 to Golden Bears
➤ UofA: Team Website

Quick Summary
Alta: A. Hall (16:50 1st), B. Gustafson (19:39 1st), J. Prokop (10:24 2nd), A. Hall (14:41 3rd), J. Kendall (17:53 3rd)
MRU: C. Bouchard (19:24 1st), R. Holmes (17:25 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (28 shots, 26 saves); MRU: Sims (20 shots, 15 saves)

After eight series thus far in the CW, this is the first one to be split. The Evil Monkeys have to be happy enough to swing in the vines, eat bananas, and throw feces in all directions. Both sides switched goalies from Friday, and maybe that wasn’t a great choice for MRU. The Bluegars are now 3-1-0, and the Monkeys are 1-2-1.

TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 3
CALGARY DINOSAURS 6

➤ UofC: Dinos set U SPORTS record with 27th consecutive win (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
TWU: J. Klessens (03:28 1st), J. Jurgeneit (17:15 1st), M. Joss (16:17 3rd)
Calg: C. Gengenbach (14:55 1st), J. Poole (05:50 2nd), B. Lee (06:01 2nd), M. Stewart (08:02 3rd), C. Gengenbach (16:53 3rd), C. Gengenbach (19:54 3rd)
Goal: TWU: Berkeliev (53 shots, 48 saves); Calg: Stankowski (18 shots, 15 saves)

The scoreboard in this series was not nearly as bad as it might have been. Bedrock U dominated the shot clock, but it still took an empty-netter to quash the hopes of Holy Trinity. The Dinos are in the 1st place log-jam at 4-0-0, and TWU falls to 0-2-0.

MACEWAN GRIFFINS 1
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2
(in a shootout)

➤ MacU: A spectacular save and two posts prevent Griffins from first win in 2-1 shootout loss to Huskies (with boxscore and video)
➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Win Shootout Thriller Against MacEwan (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
MacU: E. Strang (03:45 2nd)
Sask: J. Ball (01:30 2nd)
Goal: MacU: Davis (33 shots, 32 saves); Sask: Ross (24 shots, 23 saves)

Both sides switched goaltenders from Friday, and both played well. The shootout did not produce a goal until the Banjo-Mutts scored on the 10th attempt. The Mutts controlled more play than the Family Guys, but this was a big improvement for them from Friday night. The Mutts are now in the 1st place triumvirate at 4-0-0, and MacEwan falls to 0-3-1.

U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 5
REGINA COUGARS 4
(in a shootout)

Quick Summary
UBC: L. Kindree (18:36 1st), C. Douglas (16:44 2nd), S. Huo (15:18 3rd), L. Kindree (18:30 3rd)
Reg: G. Asham-Moroz (04:47 1st), P. Bjorklund (07:39 1st), E. Houk (06:20 2nd), R. Schmidt (08:00 2nd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (19 shots, 15 saves); Reg: Meger (57 shots, 53 saves)

No game stories are posted yet, but this one had quite an ending. The Banjo-Cats built a 4-1 lead, despite being out-shot. A late 2nd period goal gave the T-irds an opportunity for a comeback. They out-shot the Banjo-Cats 19-2 in the 3rd period, and tied it up. At least the Kittens got a bonus point, giving them a 0-2-2 record. The T-irds are in that 1st place bundle, at 4-0-0.
