I think you missed part of the conversation yesterday. So why did Jersey go out and get Meier? Because they didn't have a Tuch. Why did they get Hamilton? Because they don't have a Power or Dahlin. They were filling holes. They didn't go out and get a second Tuch or a second Dahlin. Same thing with Vegas - they had a huge gaping hole at 1C so they got Jack. We don't have those holes.
Better yet, lets take it a step further. Jersey went into opening night with their own version of UPL/Comrie as their backup (Blackwood) and he crapped the bed. So did the goaltending on a lot of other teams, because it is a crap shoot. You were shot in the rear with all of the moves that Fitzgerald made - he currently has only 16 players signed and he is seeing some pretty good players walking out the door. No holes there? Are you on their board railing the GM? Funny how that - in your mind - the offseason has ended for Adams already yet it hasn't even started for the rest of the league. - Slump Buster
New Jersey had Luke Hughes and Nemec in the system at this time last year and still went out and got Siegenthaler and John Marino. They had Hamilton on the roster already.
Do you think we can find a “can’t block the kids” quote from Fitzgerald?
There are multiple holes on the Sabres roster as of today.
That includes a top 6 winger unless you’re just assuming JJ is one |

Which good players are the Devils seeing walk out the door?
Looks like their GM identified their core and are cycling through the other roster spots to try and improve.
Remember they have both Hughes and Nemec coming soon on defense.
It's why Graves and Severson were expendable. - kingcong39
From last year's roster they are losing Wood, Tatar, Graves and Severeson. In the long run will they be better off? Absolutely. So they are letting the kids play in the hopes that - when they reach their potential - hopefully they will have been better off. That's what a smart GM does, but apparently that is only an option for other GMs. I'd say that - right now - their roster is considerably weaker than it was last year. Hell, everyone is female dogging about our D for some reason - ours is better than theirs is right now.

And the goalposts move again. How many games did Nemec and Hughes play for them last year? so the futures talk is fine when it suits your argument. Again, Marino matches up with Samuelsson. They didn't have one, they went out and got one. Sure, Siegenthaler is probably slightly better than Joker. Lets not pretend that the bottom half of their D corps LAST YEAR was anything to write home about. I would have taken our D over theirs.

That draft could not have went much better for us. Will hope Pellikka doesn't turn into the guy I think he will, but outside of that we did verrrrry well. |

Wood is a bottom of the roster, inconsistent mercurial player.
They replaced Tatar with Toffoli. Upgrade.
They were able to replace the pair of Graves and Severson, who they believed would get bigger contracts then they deserved, internally with 2nd overall and 4th overall picks. |

Their bottom half of their D is exponentially better than ours dude. Siegenthaler is excellent. Marino is a lot better than Samuelsson too. Graves is a lot better than Boosh.
Seriously how did they finish 10 wins better? |

I would expect some kind of gritty/big boy/looks the part type pick at 39. I don't think everyone at the draft table wanted Benson and you can probably guess which faction did.
Mirror image of last years draft. Exactly half the picks will be glow numbers wise. And the other half will be some variation of "look how big he is!" |

I think siegenthaler is a bit overrated, he had a nuts start and then it cooled way off, to the point where he was a regular scratch at times (even in the playoffs). I agree Marino and Graves clear Samuelsson and Lyubushkin though. |

Yes because there smart GM used a strength in there Organization to help them get better. There D pipeline is impressive, they still have Casey in the waiting. But they used it to get a top 6 winger, who we could have used. And it allowed them to let the natural growth of there team happen.
Sabres don't have close to the D prospects the Devils have and at this point have not been willing to use a strength in there Organization to help there weak points. |

Forton and Devine. Im all for different schools of thought, but there are probably modern eye-test scout guys who are far better at their job than those two. Just counting the days till their contracts are up. |

I don't doubt much of that. You conveniently left out Dahlin and Power.
They finished 10 wins better because they play some semblance of defense and had better starting goaltending for most of the year.
