Bergeron and Krejci were both huge parts of that though.
Boston has too much talent to be a bottom 10 roster, but they have a lot of work to do to get back to being a legitimate threat.
Marchand is another year older
Hall is mid and benefitted from playing deeper down the roster.
Coyle, Frederic are nice bottom 6 pieces.
Debrusk is a good player but is going to want to get paid. - Swedish_Jesus
Let’s be clear though it’s not 100% yet that PB is retired.
They’ll also 100% go get a center and he will probably play very well.
I’m just not penciling them in behind us in the standings yet. Same for Tampa.
Now if the Sabres make an impact move or two… |

LA and New York had prospect pipelines to die for and neither organization could develop them worth a crap.
I get that some prospects don’t pan out, but Jesus both teams had an embarrassment of riches and couldn’t get anything out of it.
Heck LA is even doing their best to develop Brandt Clarke as terribly as possible |

He might not retire, but it sure looked like it at the end of the year. Either way, they've got a lot of work to do and not much space to do it. While we might (after getting a quality D) have a better roster on paper than Tampa or Boston, I think we are going to be right there with them next year. I would say the same for Florida - that bottom half of that roster leaves a lot to be desired.

There is cracks under the hood in Tampa.
I told my pops if the Leafs couldn’t beat this Tampa team in the playoffs this year they’d never win a playoff series.
There were below average for a couple months even before the playoffs started.
I’ll never count that roster out, but they have a lot of work to do themselves. |

This is why I would trade all prospects for proven talent. Vegas is a prime example of doing so.
We have a very talented young core already in place. It's time to use or picks and prospects as trade bait to finalize the roster.
But sadly I have a strong feeling we won't be trading for anyone of significance. |

Brandt Clarke isn't going anywhere. He is one of the top prospects in all of hockey. They publicly said they weren't trading him for Chickenman or anyone else. - Slump Buster

Now we are going from one extreme to the other.
There have been countless trades in the last decade where the team trading the futures lost the trade.
There needs to be a middle ground |

Whether to retain Tyson Jost: After re-signing Kyle Okposo and Zemgus Girgensons, the only real internal decision left is whether to bring back the RFA Jost. Jost was a successful waiver pickup for the Sabres last season and has loved his time in Buffalo. But the Sabres are starting to get short on roster space, so bringing back Jost might keep a younger player off the NHL roster. — Matthew Fairburn

A big part of why Jost was a big waiver claim was that they needed a C. Their plan of Girgs at 4C lasted a few minutes. Mitts wasn't working at 3C.
C is a question again this year. Is Mitts better as a winger or a C? Do they want Krebs stuck at 4C again? What if there's an injury? Is Kulich a full-time C this year? Jost as depth makes sense.
Is the 2.25m QO an issue? That would be comical after overpaying Girgs and Okposo.

Sure, you might pick the wrong players and it might not work out for you. But it's still the best path forward to building a championship. Vegas did make some nice (and not-so-nice) moves later on, but their core came from the (expansion) draft.

Perhaps they circle back on him if they don’t find an upgrade ?

Yeah, I know it was. I just don't see it happening as I think Clark has a chance to be generational. I think PDL is a is 2nd line center looking for big money.

Didn't Adams seem to indicate that they were going to qualify him? He wasn't good later in the year but he did play well early, including the turnaround to Mitts season. |

I'd have no problem if they wanted a better/different 4C. They just seem very content with retaining guys who are good enough.
QO deadline is 6/30 at 5PM. Going to learn a lot about them this week.

They must be either trying to to get him to take less for one year, or maybe (less likely) they are trying to sign him for more than one year?

I'm not talking about current nhl prospects. Savoie, kulich, ostlund, Johnson this years 1st are all reasonable trade pieces. Our top 6 is mostly solidified for many years.
You have to give to get and you only have so many roster spots available. |

I don’t think they do. I bet he doesn’t have a big market and they either get him very cheap or he goes somewhere else. But |

You'd hope a few of these prospects are challenging that top 6.

PLD to the Kings.
Cannot believe they blocked Byfield and Turcotte in order to get substantially better - sbroads24
Byfield already has played 93 games with the Kings last 2 seasons.
Turcotte isn't ready, heis still struggling in the AHL, and seems to have regressed a bit last season.
Not sure what your point is actually. |
