I think the Darcy analogy is very apt. Darcy very rarely lost a trade, but also made too few. He also tended to acquire low-cost assets and hope for the best. Sometimes it did (Briere) and sometimes it didn't (Raffi Torres)

I agree here. Cautious to a fault.

Right but I dont think its fatalism to be disappointed by it or be concerned. Its a long drought and without a healthy dose of copium, its hard to get excited about two 3rd pair d-men.

That could change, and im sure if it did people would feel differently. This is also tough because the GM hasnt been in this position before so I can't say either way what he'll end up doing.

- Michael Ghofrani

But wearing this drought around our collective heads is garbage and unproductive. The same people were concerned about the same nonsense last year and the year before, and we took huge jumps in points.

Look at what Bean and company did. Did they factor in the drought to their plans? Nope. They actually took a step backwards their first year by getting rid of players that could have helped them that year.

Anyway, I've spent enough time on this - I promised myself I would stop arguing this stuff. I have no idea if these moves are great or not, and I am not arguing that they are fantastic. But it feels stupid for anyone else to come here and pretend that they know that the moves are bad, or not enough. There is a big difference between "I would do it differently" and "the gm is asleep".

He traded up for a franchise QB and then traded significant draft capital to land a franchise receiver. And then he signed Von Miller to a huge deal in FA.

Adams has shown no desire to take a swing like that, other than when forced to by trade requests

Disagree. Darcy did a great job building a cup contending team. That is where Adams is now - he is building. When it came time to add to that team in 2007, he didn't. When it came time to rebuild that team later on, he fell in love with players that he shouldn't have fallen in love with (and yes, he had to win every trade). Adams hasn't even been to that part of the mountain (contending for a the cup). If the team stalls or he fails to build at that time, then sure, compare him to Darcy. The jury is out right now.

Seriously. Traded up twice for Allen

Remember when Beane talked about having lots of conversations at the 2018 draft but inevitably couldn’t get anything done? Oh wait no he actually gets it done

You lose me at the darcy analogy because they were an all time bad drafting team under him. And I dont think youll ever catch adams willingly signing ville leino. Although I do understand the comparison in terms of execution.

Well, yes - he built through the draft and then sprinkled in trades when we were an established team. He got Diggs before that. How is that different from what Adams has done? He made trades as part of the build. His main focus was also building through the draft. He also traded up in the draft. Most importantly, his team is still trending upwards.

I must have missed it - where was the Von Miller of the NHL that was available in free agency this year?

Last year should have been the year where the Sabres signed their Brown and Beasley and made the playoffs - they opted for Comrie and Lyubushkin instead.

This year should have been the year they traded for Diggs - they have not.

Godspeed to the plan but Beane and Adams are nothing alike

Brown and Beasley were signed because they didn't have any wide receivers. There were gaping holes on the roster. This is the same argument I make with Broads - you go out and get those guys when you don't have them. He has a plan and he is sticking to it. That is the opposite of being afraid to make a move.

One makes it known to the media that his job is hard and that he works a lot of hours and has a lot of meetings but ultimately does very little

The other does very little talking but always addresses needs and makes splashes when the team needs something

They couldn’t be more different

The purpose of the analogy was to highlight their reticence to trade unless forced

Adams has been here how long? 3 seasons? He's made 21 trades. Break them down however you guys want to, but the fact remains he's averaging 7 a season.

He's not Darcy

You can't possibly be this thick. Then again, I think you are. Adams made moves and said that other moves didn't happen. That is the exact same as Beane, TMGM, or every other gm. When was he making excuses? Again, you have an Adams filter for some reason.

They have a 21-year-old starting goaltender and a 24-year-old bad goaltender. What are we doing here?

Trading guys on expiring contracts or guys who demand to be traded are not the same as trading for NHL roster players

But you know this

yes, because we can judge a goalie based on their age. Nobody is at all excited about the 21 year old. The other guy? We'll see. For all we know, he wont' be here opening night.

I *love* Levi. But their plan here is ridiculous. They're setting themselves up to wear him out by Christmas if this is their plan.

Now who’s moving goalposts

You legitimately sat here days ago and said “Oh im with you guys it’s time to go for it”

And now you’ve spent all of today making wild excuses as to how the Sabres actually have no more holes and are all set.

Just crazy behavior because deep down you know this guy is totally gun shy

..... if that is their plan. And to be honest, I'd rather go into the season with UPL as my goalie than trading for Gibson (cringing) or overpaying for Korpisolo. Adams may not have made the moves that some have made, but he also hasn't made any stupid moves either.
