Well, count the Sabres out of taking on bloated contracts...which I don't disagree with for the vast majority.
I think trades that involve a draft pick, especially top 20 or so may be delayed until tomorrow as clubs wait to see who is in their spot before making the deal.
Trades not involving top picks I would think should start today to occur.

I agree in most aspects. But there are Teams hurting Cap wise that have players that could be of interest that might be had for Taking on a Contract.

Our source indicated that the Red Wings would send Filip Zadina, the No. 17 overall pick, and either one of Detroit’s second-round picks this year or Boston’s first-rounder next year to the Senators in exchange for DeBrincat.

That being said, there is a catch to this trade going down. According to the source, for the trade to happen, the deal is contingent on two things. “One being that a certain unknown prospect must be available for Ottawa to pick at 17, and the second being that an extension has to be agreed upon with DeBrincat, which shouldn’t be terribly hard to accomplish because Detroit is on his list of desired cities to play in.”

Giving Okposo and Girgs $5mm was the luxury spending on vets.

Unless a team hands Adams a defenseman it’s going to be a boring summer

The NBA will have more trades this week than the NHL.

Yea but Ottawa made a terrible mistake trading for him. They’ll never be able to recoup…….

I assume this is mostly because the oddsmakers couldnt find anyone else with enough cap space.

Would rather have Weegar or Hanifin but if SJ retains, I say he is third on my list.

The trade hasn't happened yet. I still think they were foolish because the player wasn't worth what they gave up for him originally and not worth the money to extend him.

This. Also, it doesn't at all jive with what Adams seems to want to do. Even if SJ retained 4 mill (which would require us to pay a premium, not to mention SJ didn't seem to want to hold that much), we would be paying 3 defensemen big money.

It's also diminishing returns. Acquiring Erik Karlsson to not give him PP or 3 on3 time, or to take it away from Power just defeats the purpose.

Also, Ottawa went all-in with a bunch of trades and still finished below us (but hey, they tried - am I doing this right?). They have only 5 picks in this draft (none in the top 100) and a pretty empty farm system. Throw in their ownership turmoil and they are going to have a tough road ahead.

Ottawa is first.

Karlsson wants to go somewhere where he can win.

Yes, they tried. It didn’t work that happens. Sometimes you can’t be afraid to take the rest though.

If Buffalo were to trade a rumored of that amount for one player, they would probably still have the third or fourth best prospect system in the entire league so I don’t understand what the issue is

Their mistake was emptying out their prospect pool when they weren't at a stage to be making those kinds of trades. They were trying to get over the hump to get into the playoffs, not to win a championship. Now they are stuck in the middle given their lack of assets.

Karlsson aside from salary to me, is the perfect fit of the type of defenseman the Sabres want.

A puck moving rush defender.

Yes because if the Sabres would have acquired one of those players the same thing would have happened.

Yes, but imagine having three of them all playing 25 minutes a night and it being a constant onslaught of rushes from the back end

But there is only one puck. That would be like having 6 stud wide receivers in football. It is a diminishing return, not to mention having too much of your cap spent on D. Also, I can't imagine what we would have to give SJ in order to make them hold enough to even make this possible.

You said they went all in and ended worse than us. Doesn't mean Cat wouldn't have worked here. Doesn't mean Chychrun wouldn't have worked here. He'll Chychrun might have been enough when Dahlin and Samuelsson were both hurt to get us another point or 2 during that time. I wanted Cat, glad they didn't get him, but doesn't mean he wouldn't have been different here then in Ottawa.
