Cause it's been a glaring need for 3 years and still not filled. - Buff36
That doesn't change the question. They could give up 3 or 4 premium assets and still have many more available. They could also just overpay somebody in free agency and not need to make the trade for a D. I would think the goalie comes in free agency anyway.

What is premium to you and how many do you believe the Sabres have? What 4 are you willing to move and how does that not effect next season?

Just so we're clear, now you're interested in protecting the kids?
Anyway, it is a good question. It starts with 2 firsts, Ostlund, and maybe Rosen. You're talking about getting a superstar walking in the door in 3 years on a rookie contract. That's a mind-numbing thought. Anyone can go out and get 3rd and 4th line players to sprinkle in later on. Getting top-of-the-line assets is tough.
None of the aforementioned assets affect next year.

What ?, I already said I would move up to get him, but I would not do it if it affected me from making a move that will help me now. If the move didn't affect me from helping know then sure.

Starting off by making an assumption on what I’m interested in protecting the kids….where in the world did you pull that out from? What is clear from that?
You’re essentially ready to pay 4 1sts for him, that I understand.
That trade doesn’t effect next season you are right, it definitely hurts the chances of building out the roster, which is needed now, next season and so on.
If it’s easy to find quality depth, how come Adams has failed 3 seasons in a row to round out his rosters?

Probly is the kid has kind of been a jerk to teams about interviews, has a KHL contract you need to wait for, and doesn’t have a guarantee to even come over
I’m not saying he’s staying in the KHL forever. I’m just saying the old school hockey gms. That scares the hell out of them

Again, you try to have it both ways. Repeat after me: Adams wasn't trying to "build out the roster" the last 2 seasons. They had to find out what their assets were. That endeavor has been a huge success in the way the assets turned out. Had he not done that, we would have gotten rid of the Mitts for nothing because they weren't patient enough. Now its time to finish up the roster.
This is why I asked you and the other sword swallowers about the holes on this roster: 4D and goalie. That's it. Everyone is shot in the rear with what the Devil's did with Hamilton and Meieir - they made those moves because they had giant holes on 1D and wing. We don't have those holes. In the coming years we will have pure competition to see if the kids are better than the young core.
