??? Why would SJ have to give up a 1st, and why aren't they getting anything back? I get they don't really want/need him right now, but he's the reigning Norris winner and just had a monster offensive year.
Despite the fact that I don't really like D-men who are primarily point producers (I'm praying KK is even average defensively), He's easily held in high regard by the league. Typically a "middle man" team just gets a mid-round pick for doing so. Not sure they'd get one 1st, let alone 2.

I put it out there for discussion and you made some great points.
Any team that takes on $5.75 mil for
4 years will expect at least one first round pick plus something coming back. Because it is the #4 overall pick Chicago could also gives up the Tampa #1 pick in 2024.
If someone like Carolina sees him as putting them over the top they would be getting Karlson at an incredibly cheap cap hit for 4 years, they might be willing to give up a very late 1st round pick in 2023 (30th overall), one of their 2nd round picks in 2024 and an A level prospect.
San Jose would be getting cap space for 4 years, an A level prospect from Carolina's deep prospect pool (ranked number 10 by the Athletic), a 2024 2nd from Carolina and Tampa's 1st round pick in 2024.
Carolina gets Karlson at $5.75 mil for 4 years.
San Jose gets $5.75 mil cap room for 4 years, an A level prospect from Carolina, a 2024 2nd round pick from Carolina, Tampa's 1st round pick in 2024 from the Hawks.
Hawks get the #4 and #30 overall picks in the 2023 draft and a $5.75 mil cap hit for 4 years.
