He was allowed 2 five year plans Pat.
Was any other habs GM given that, I wonder.. - pete26
there was never a "five-year plan" with Bergevin, Pete, that was Pierre Gauthier.
he wasn't perfect, but he wasn't the most horrible GM ever, no one is gonna convince me of this lol. |

is drafting Michkov that risky..? how many times has a drafted Russian player refused or was prevented from playing in the NHL? - Pat1993
I think it's the uncertainty with him. He might come here in 3 years, or he may stay in Russia. Some say he's the second best player in this draft, some say he has questionable attitude with his teammates, can't play in his own zone, etc....depends on who you read or who you listen to. Personally, I have no idea.
I've seen highlights of him. Seems really talented, but I wonder how he can adapt his game to North America's style. It seems so easy, but with a bigger ice surface over there talented players have so much time to drive the play and create offense. I'm always a bit skeptical until I've seen them play here.
It's another gamble, but if he finishes his contract in the KHL and comes to North America right after, Habs would have the opportunity to add a 21 year old potential star forward who has already been playing professionally for years, and who would come here playing on an entry level contract. |

I'm aware there's a certain "gamble", but I feel people are making it way bigger than it actually is. I mean, the kid is gonna be at the draft with his agent, I'm aware it doesn't actually guarantee anything but by doing so he's definitely showing interest.

Luckily there was still something in the cupboard when he got canned.

Yeah, the 5 year plan was from the Gainey-Gauthier era. That was pinned on Bergevin's head for some reason.
...and yeah, he wasn't the worst. I think he had a plan to rebuild the team, but it got completely screwed up by that shortened 2013 season where the Habs made the playoffs when they weren't supposed to. After that, any talk of a rebuild made Geoff Molson's skin crawl, and they had to do some roof patching to stay in the playoffs picture. |

Of course, I guess there is also the Russia factor in there. Nobody knows what the future holds. Hey, maybe he told teams that he isn't going back to Russia... |

Actually, and ironically, the cupboards were the best they've ever been under his tenure when he was fired. |

And a wealth of future draft picks, where typically, a new GM gets very few picks in the first 2-3 years, as the previous one traded them. |

thats where it loses any kind of sense to me
the main reason this team has any future right now, well, its because of Bergevin. He got all their most imortant players
The new Gm did some good moves here and there, yeah, ok.
But the main pieces were there when he got here.
anyway |
