The next year, 84, is when the Habs again surprised everyone by drafting Peter Svoboda with the #5 pick. No other team knew he defected and there was this bean-pole kid who did not speak English or French walked out into the middle of the Forum and everyone was bewildered about who this kid was... he looked shocked at the crowd.
They also go Corson (who everyone thought they would pick at 5), Richer and Roy that year too.
Draft was 12 rounds back then.

this is what I found though...
Tretiak was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League's (NHL's) 1983 entry draft. The Soviet Ice Hockey Federation, however, refused to grant his release, and Tretiak never played in the NHL.
it could be that both him and the federation didn't want anything to do with the NHL lol |
