He's a Cup winner who has gone to 4 Stanley Cup Finals and has almost 200 games of playoff experience. I dunno why they gave him all the money other than being nice, but I understand why they would want him. I assume they've made a back room deal guaranteeing he will go to a Cup contender at the deadline. - AdamFrench
Right so he won a single cup forever ago and is a cup finals curse now and doesn't fight so he can't really "protect" anyone else. I don't question the want as many teams have proven he is a desired asset but the overpay is pretty big and the backroom deal only works if Chicago is prepared to take whatever the market will pay for Perry at the TDL.
Just seems like poor management decisions to me, if they were prepared to spend 4 million I think they could have got more than just Corey Perry as a rental for 75% of the season.

That's good in theory except Perry doesn't fight or very rarely fights. What's he going to do when someone messes with Bedard go spear the guy? If overpaying for someone to protect Bedard was the goal why not overpay a Ryan Reeves or that type of player? Perry is a 4th liner at this point anyway. - Cush29
Chicago isn’t going to need top 6 guys in the top 6, my guess is that they’re not going to be going after a winning season.
As for fighting he was tied for 5th, literally only 4 guys who fought more last year. Deslauriers (14), Maroon/Watson (12), Jeannot (11), Gadjovich/Olivier/Pezzetta/Xhekaj & Perry (9) |

Exactly. Perry’s superpower is pissing people off. If that’s what you want get an enforcer, not an agitator. |

So I keep getting July 1 deadline messed up in my head.
What are the "must dos" for Treewaiting today and if he doesn't poop happens tomorrow? Sign or trade Matthews and Nylander?
Busy day if so. - underhill14
I think Matthews signing is a sure thing and the deadline doesn’t matter but Willy might be another story. |

Come on Dozzer - Perry may have been in 9 fights but let's not pretend he's a fighter. He was likely jumped in more than half of those and was defending himself because he pissed someone off so badly. As CC said he's a super pest not an enforcer and not the guy known to jump in and handle things when one of his teammates is being picked on.

If a player fights they’re a fighter. Yes he’s primarily an agitator but that doesn’t change the simplicity of the definition of a fighter.
As I said he was 5th in the league so calling him a player who doesn’t fight is simply incorrect. |

Also folks the cup winner just had a $3 mill 4th liner so it’s not too much of an overpayment at $4 to keep a guy at a non competitive team.
Cheers. |

Oh ok so I guess Auston Matthews is a fighter then because he fights right? Is that a simplistic enough definition of a fighter?
It's ok you brush past my point & misquote me (I never said he doesn't fight, I said he isn't a fighter and I was using the term as a role on a team and you knew that) with disregard to try and prove your point and proclaim your opinion is right, all with the usual passive aggressive closing.
This is a recipe for super engaging and enjoyable dialogue..............not.
I'll agree to disagree with your assertion that Corey Perry is a super tough fighter, one of the toughest guys in the league who others fear will drop his gloves and pummel them at the slightest provocation.
Have a good day. |

The Blackhawks should have traded for Tom Wilson and signed him to an extension.
Perry is a mucker who can't be relied upon to seriously protect Bedard. |

Having said that, I'm looking at you now Willie, Auston, and Mitch! |

I feel like willie is going to be traded, hes gonna want 9.5 to 10m easily...and why not?
Dubas handed Matthews and marner huge contracts when they didnt deserve it. Marner should have gotten 8.5m per max and Matthews 9.5 max. Dubas foolishly handing them more than10m per has hindered the team since the contracts were signed. Hell, 4-5 years later tkafack had 100pts and still signed for less than what those two signed all those years ago.
Now willie is going to want to get paid soemthing comparable and why not?
As result, the leafs aren't going to be able to pay him so he'll probably get traded. Unless Am signs for only 11m per....which we know isnt happening.
But we'll see. - Fakepartofme
Matthews was an over $10M player, easy. But yeah, Marner's absolute top limit should've been $9.5M max. And that still put him above all of his comparables. |

I'm sure in the minds of the Blackhawks what they did makes sense but I'm with you as far as if the goal was to protect Bedard then get a guy who at least puts some fear into guys like Wilson, Reeves (who is a UFA) etc.
End of the day it's Chicago so the care factor is pretty WGAS anyway for me, just seems like a huge overpay for the worm who is 38.
To put it another way is Perry 65% better than Kampf is? lol

So you agree Auston Matthews is a fighter then cool!
And great strategy, post a parting shot in a passive aggressive way so you can have the last word and then claim a response is just me having a desire to have the last word.
No hypocrisy there at all right?
Take care |
