Ryan Johansen was had for free.
It would be the same type of trade.
I am just saying its highly doubtful any team gives him a penny over 4M. - Santo_44
Perry got 4m, which is a huge overpayment.
So who knows.
We'll see.

I won't compare Chicago contracts to what teams will actually offer in free agency.
I just think its common sense because literally any team could have had him 3x4M. Without giving up assets.
It is a terrible buyout anyways. |

Then why didnt a team trade for him at 50% retained?
Go look at his buyout cap hit...its worse than the trade. - Santo_44
Corey Perry and Foligno just got 4M for 1 season.
They probably didnt want to give up assets on top the salary. He may get 2 years 4.25M for example. |

Alex Galchenyuks UFA rights were traded for Ryan Johansen
Teams did not have to give up assets
I don't give a flying (frank) what Chicago does.
Perry signed a much cheaper contract for TB. Chicago is overpaying talent so that play there, its irrelevant to me.
They are capped out now too. |

No he's right.
If any team wanted him yesterday and was willing to pay him an AAV of $4M then they could have traded for him without giving up any assets.
Leafs for example could have traded the rights to Jordi Benn for Matt Duchesne with 50% retained. Pred's would have preferred that over the buyout and Leafs would have had him at $4M AAV for 3 years.
Didn't happen so you have to assume nobody values him at $4M for 3 years. Plus the buyout/unqualified market looks bigger than usual. Buyers market maybe.
RoR and Schenn should get their pens working. |

Duchene is better then Johansen. There was also a 3rd year on the contract you would have to committ too. I guess well find out.

I had the same thought. With these surprise buyouts, you'd have to think ROR and others' value may he dropping just a bit. |

Again, i doubt he gets that amount....but stranger things have happened |

Yep
This year it is going to be if you want money you have to go to a bad team...and even then that money is being used up already |

People are forgetting that buyout saves them money. Well see what he gets. Im not saying I think he is worth 4M+ BTW, but some teams are dumb.

If for some insane reason the Leafs actually sign him, Keefe should be fired immediately if he lines them up together. |

Buyout saves them 11M in hard cash.
Trade with 50% retained saves them 10M in hard cash.
I hear you but that $1M probably wasn't the variable. |
