As has been mentioned here by many (including yourself I think), Mayfield's value is in the playoffs when the games are not called as close. I think Lou is smart to focus on the playoffs, so I'm okay if he signs Mayfield. Not sure how high I'd go, but if he keeps it under a $4 million/season cap hit, then I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. - JohnScammo
4 mill is up there. I would not go higher than 3.25 mill.

A little. Which is why I said "under $4 MM"...
Obviously, $3.25 MM would be even better. With term, I think it might be doable. And also, obviously, it depends on how much he's offered by other teams and how much of a discount he's willing to give to the Islanders. |

This is the issue. Islanders are an older and slower team. The time to strike and go for it was two years ago after the last Tampa series. Young players make mistakes, but they are also more durable and have more upside. If you can at least use younger and cheaper talent for the 3rd and 4th lines, the more money you have for the top 6 in a Cap world. - ses111
They thought with Lambert they could squeeze one more year out of these forwards by adopting his more offensive game. They did to a point but they may have hit their limit. The pp is not effective and even strength below average. Without mvp Sorokin, this was no playoff team.

How much term are we giving a player who is going to be 31 at the start of the season? I’ve always liked mayfield for what he is which is a good bottom pairing defenseman. Imagining he’s something other then that is a mistake. For most of last season he was over utilized and exposed. I thought he did pick up his play towards the end of the season and in the playoffs.
The argument could be that is when it matters. Problem is this team desperately needs consistency during the regular season just to have a hope of squeezing into the playoffs. I have a real hard time paying him more than three million per especially on a long term contract. That would turn negative real quick imo. |

3 years would be max term I would give. It does not get this deal done. Anything more than three years and your giving up draft picks or prospects to move money.

How you guys feel about Gostisbehere? I believe he has family in CT. Maybe would come to area a little cheaper? Can still move the puck. |

Friedman said....
We talked about DeBrincat and our default that it was Detroit, I don't think so anymore, as I was leaving the draft on Thursday I was getting a lot of people telling they didn't think it was going to work with Detroit," Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "I think Anaheim had looked in, but I was told not likely, I heard Anaheim was interested though. I know the Islanders have checked in and they've got room now, Islanders have room for a Tarasenko or DeBrincat or whatever they want to do there. I've wondered about Washington too, can DeBrincat and Ovechkin both work together on the power play? Dallas doesn't have a lot of room but someone said to me Jim Nill is a creative guy, if Jim Nill and the Dallas Stars want DeBrincat, they're going to find out a way to do that." |

I would be interested to see what that would cost. He is a year younger than Mayfield.

I think there is some potential out there for an impact player. The question is will Lou be able to make something happen.
I will not get too excited...I will have my daughters graduation party to keep me distracted. |

I would be completely shocked if it’s not more then 3 years. Mayfield would be insane to accept that. His contract will be at least 5 or 6 years maybe more depending on the aav. I’m certainly not saying they should give that to him but that’s what he’ll get. I would be completely on board with a three year 3 million per contract but that’s a pipe dream. |

Lots of talk about Debrincat but what do we have to trade besides future first rounders? I like the player but that would be a beyond dumb move imo. IF we had a deeper prospect pool I would be all for it for him but we don’t. I would much rather tarasenko if it’s possible. He’s not going to cost us any futures. |

Agreed. Already been discussed on here ad nauseam. The guy is going to get paid by someone. If he takes enough of a discount to stay, I'd keep him. For all his faults, he did end up +8 during the regular season, which was better than a lot of guys (e.g., Dobson, Barzal, Lee, Parise among others). If they had a solid replacement lined up from Bridgeport, that would be another story, but they don't....

Trading more #1 picks is a bad idea. If it was a last piece of the puzzle situation, you do not think twice trading the pick. Broken record time, but I would hold onto as much Cap space for next year. There does not seem to be big moves available this year anyway that will put the Islanders over the top. |

Definitely could see today for #Isles being about Scott Mayfield and G Semyon Varlamov returning on new deals. Crystal ball not telling me whether that will be announced or not today. |

Varly said all along he really wanted to stay with #Isles.
Lou always believes in building from net on out and still has one of the best tandems in NHL with Sorokin-Varlamov |

Great timing for Twitter to be down.
It's sounds quite bit like both Mayfield and Varlamov are staying. The question now will be where the resto fthw $$$ goes |

Yeah agreed but you still can’t sign over 30 players to long term over valued contracts. Not sure how many times we need to do that before we realize it’s a mistake. I say that not knowing exactly what his contract will be of course but if it is something along those lines it’s another misstep imo. |
