Why not? Zadarov contract is $3.75M with one year to go. He had 14 goals last year and is a large, tough defenseman. That contract and Tyler Bertuzzi's one year contract would cancel out Willy's contract with maybe $1M to spare. - PrinceLH
His 14 goals were a blip ....and he contributed 7 apples all year. He'd be a nice big 4/5 kinda blue liner and I'd love him ...but Willie's worth wayy more than that.
For reference ...the Flames love him ...and he was 5th in minutes played on their blue line. He was a 3rd pairing guy for them. |

Some bad math there. Willy's cap hit this year is 6.9 million. 5.5 + 3.75 is not 1 less than 6.9. - joel878 It's not about this year. It's about 1 year from now, when Matthews new deal kicks in. They have to move on from Willy and get 2 assets back for the forgoing Cap hit. Hell, you could say that Bertuzzi was getting the money that was going to O'Reilly for 1 year.

It's the Cap savings. Think of it this way. Once Nylander gets traded, his $10M per ask is off the table. What's stopping the Leafs from re-signing Bertuzzi anytime this year on an 8 year deal? He could only have gotten 7 on this signing. You would technically be adding Zadorov and Bertuzzi for Nylander if you look straight cap. - PrinceLH
Simplistic view. Nylander is a significant asset. You don't give away an asset to create cap space. Free agents don't cost assets only $. I am sure Tree will be interested in trading for Zadorov. The ask will not be close to your suggestion.

Now put Murray on LTIR, trade Brodie, and sign Domi. - Mr.President Murray isn't going on LTIR. He was declared fit, during the Florida series. So he can't go on LTIR. He could be traded, or bought out however.

Leafs might not be done. Hearing Max Domi is still be an option for them, but a few other teams in play.
-David Pagnotta
Having one of Knies, Bertuzzi, Domi and Reaves on each line would certainly change this teams dynamic. |

Finally a good move. Wish it was more then 1 year for Bertuzzi, but it's a good move.next Towes/Domi would be good. |

It's very much about this year. Because this year is the only year Bertuzzi and Zadorov will be paid the #'s you just cited them at.
The year after, cap is projected for a substantial increase. You also don't have a number for Matthews yet.
The year after is not the year they're looking at competing in in the moment, that's this upcoming year. |

Agree with this except Murray not going on LTIR - he will either be traded to a dumpster fire like the Yotes for a fourth and a used jock strap or at worst he gets bought out.

I'd go even further and say you need both. You already have the impact top 6 forward in Willy. Why trade him just to maybe end up where you started? - joel878
88's only getting moved if he's asking too much AND if there's a solid deal on the table. |

You also don't give him a $10M credit card when Timo Meier got $8.8M for compatible numbers. Willy is a one dimensional player that can score but his defense is suspect, and he doesn't kill penalties. He had a career year, because it was a contract year. Get the best trade you can for him and save the cap space.

Trade Brodie and Robertson to Van for Brock Boesner. (Matthews buddy ole chum)
Trade Nylander for Zadarov and Coleman.
Lose Murray's Cap hit.
Bertuzzi, Matthews, The Brock
Knies, Tavares, Marner
Coleman, Kampf, Jarkrok
Lafferty, Holmberg, Reaves
Rielly, Zadarov
McCabe, Klingberg
Gio, Lilyjigren
Timmins
Samsonov
Woll
Let's go (frank) some poop up!
(Plus Zad and The Brock can re-sign if they work out well when the Cap goes up next year) |

I would not mind seeing Brodie replaced with someone like Dylan Demelo somehow. Pretty proficient defensively, way better offensively, and saves 2 million on the cap. |

Okay, well let’s trade him to Arizona…lol - Mr.President Him and Muzzin's contract for a 7th! There would go almost $10M in cap savings. Phoenix gets to the cap floor and pays very little of that money.

Yup, after very underwhelming contracts ended out on day one by Treliving, Bertuzzi, if he can stay healthy, will be a very good player for the Leafs. |

He remains an asset. Even signed at $9M his reported asking, he remains an asset that can be traded for assets. He would be the best player on several NHL teams.

He's sore that Marner makes more. Leafs need to get less soft and hardened on the boards. You might lose a few goals, but your GAA would also go down. Calgary is not on Willy's do not trade list. There are multiple targets of interest there.

This comment is so (frank)ing dumb. If the reason he wants 10 is because he is sore that Marner makes more why would he agree to less than Marner's current contract and potentially 3-4 less than Marner's next contract.
People need to quit lying/exaggerating if they want to be taken seriously.

Agreed. He has underrated hands, and is a very good net front player on the PP. I'm hopefully for the PP this year. |

Cap update ...
Assuming Murray can be erased by trade (if not factor in ~675k less space after a buyout).
And assuming Sammy is about $3M on a 1 or 2 yr contract.
Leafs would have $3M in space with 1 more middle six forward spot to fill.
That starts the season with 12F, 7D, 2G.
Does $3M buy you Domi, Tartar, P. Suter? .... |
