He is, but hes also significantly better than EJ.

I think the idea is, replacing bryson and lybushkin full time on pair 3 with stillman and jokiharju/clifton, adds almost as many wins as if you only upgraded from jokiharju to an average #4 d-man.

That original 3rd pair was a negative 1.5 xWAR so even if the new one is only like +0.5 the move adds 2 wins to the team.

For reference, pesce was worth 0.5 xWAR and Jokiharju was -0.2. On paper a full switch out of the third pair adds more than swapping only Jokiharju out.

Obviously, this is a very simplistic breakdown but more meant to illustrate what they are going for.

Not my first choice, but i at least understand the logic. The goaltending on the other hand, very weird and bad idea.

Wonder when the last time a team carried 3 at the start of a season was.

Think plans went horribly wrong if they have to.

I would trade Ryan Johnson right now if it meant bringing back a true top 4 defender like Pesce or Toews.

There's missing info on capfriendly, Brett Pesce has a 15 team no trade and the Sabres are in fact on it. (apologize if this is old info)

Theyre mostly done for the summer it looks like. Theyll look for a short term goalie add, 89 mentioned Murray (i dont think it will be him but it fits the description).
