This is a pretty objective summary of the best/worst-case scenarios in terms of the Korpisalo signing...
https://www.silversevense...a-senators-nhl-offseason/
I realize that a lot of people would have preferred one of Andersen, Varlamov, or Raanta on a shorter-term deal, but the fact that all of them re-signed with their existing teams had to be a major factor in this decision.
To that point... Jesus, is Carolina ever a well-run team. They take the risk of losing all of Staal, Andersen, and Raanta as UFA, but wind up losing none of them. They lose all of Pacioretty, Gostisbehere, Puljujarvi, Stastny, and MacEachern as UFA, but then manage to further upgrade one of the best D-groups in the NHL with Dmitri Orlov, add Michael Bunting, and still have $4M for additional upgrades. They're just a model of decisive roster management. |

Perrault is still years away from being a goal scorer close to DeBrincat.
Can you imagine Zegras-DeBrincat?
If Anaheim doesn't give up a 1st they have TONS of prospects (Nico Myatovic, Nathan Gaucher, Olen Zellweger, Jacob Perreault) to trade with to PHI. They will still keep their young core together in Trevor Zegras, Troy Terry, Jamie Drysdale, Mason McTavish, Pavel Mintyukov, and now Leo Carlsson - AlfieisKing
If Debrincat, as reported, wants a no-tax state to play in or close to Michigan, he isn't going to want to go to California.
Debrincat is trying to pull a Matthew Tkachuk - go where he wants to, get paid what he wants - and is finding out he isn't no Matthew freakin' Tkachuk. |

Any of the rebuilding teams (Ana, Ari, Chi, CBJ, SJ, Philly...I'd include WINN as they have to restock Wheeler, Helly, etc) are not going to give up a first for the next two years.
I'd argue the reason players like Debrincat, Helly, Nylander, etc have not been traded yet is that NO team wants to give up a 1st. Or even the cap hit.

Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton
To Philadelphia
Mathieu Joseph, Tyler Boucher, Lassi Thomson, Jacob Perreault, '24 1st (ANA)
To Anaheim Ducks
Alex DeBrincat - AlfieisKing
Something along these lines works for me. I like the addition of a middle 6 forward that has some bite to the game. Konecny also is a nice addition. Debrincat is a higher end forward which makes this a fair trade from an Ottawa perspective on value in, value out.

Yup. The assistant GM (Eric Tulsky) for Carolina keeps getting floated as a possible GM candidate. When Andlauer takes over, I'd like to see him explore a GM upgrade.

Some good bottom 6 Forwards out there if the Sens want to go bargain hunting (ie under $1.5 AAV): Motte, Ritchie, Malgin, Suter, Josh Bailey, etc
Debrincat holding everything up..... |

Zadina clears.
Suprised nobody wnated him, even a rebuilding team, but two years left scared teams away I guess. |

Not to mention Waddell has done all this with a notoriously tight fisted and cantankerous owner who has in the past blocked and restricted moves, but clearly understands his hockey and when to step in. In a weird secondary market.
Lots of parallels to the Sens, except Dundon's principal message to Waddell has not been 'save me money' as much as it has been 'find me value'. It helps that they have a solid, dynamic coach. Carolina over the past 7 years is what the Sens could have/should have been. |

Would a player like Jesse Puljujarvi be of interest, if he were game to take a lower-AAV deal in exchange for a better lineup opportunity? The Senators are going to need to roll the dice at some point on at least a couple of forwards, and Puljujarvi strikes me as a forward with the size/ability to complement a middle-six line. It would also be a relatively good opportunity for him to re-establish his game, after CAR gave him nothing but 4th-line ice time and then declined to give him a QO. |

Saint John didn't win the Memorial Cup in 2017, but they did make it to the Memorial Cup round of the CHL playoffs. They were led by Joseph, Gauthier, Chabot, and Veleno in Memorial Cup scoring that year, but finished 3rd - behind Erie (who had DeBrincat on the roster), and Windsor who hosted and won the tournament. - khawk
I was fortunate enough to see the 2017 team live a few times . They were an elite junior team.. |

There is a big black cloud on the horizon and players don't see the storm coming. This summer, the cap hit on next season from new deals is $354.5m. so far. Players are taking short term deals thinking next year will be a big increase in cap. Boy are they in for a shock.
If cap goes up $5m per team ($160m total increase of 32 teams) it is not going to make a huge difference. Star players will get everything they ask for. Teams will put big dollars into long term deals to keep their own RFAs. There will be less money for UFAs next summer than what has been spent this year, Guys who have taken short term one year deals will be badly burned next summer.

Wings would be much better off to sign Tarasenko for less money and term and give up nothing. Then use some assets to trade for Kyle Connor or Lawson Crouse. Improves the team a hell of a lot more and much better use of cap space. |

Acceptable. Might throw in a 4th rd pick and Thomson if they upped the draft pick to a first, but I can't see Stevie Y giving up a 1st round.

The great part of what they are doing, especially at the goaltending position, is that it gives them the freedom to upgrade if need be, if there is a major injury, come trade deadline day. And they are also running 3 goalies, which is becoming a norm.

I just came in to once again say that Parker kelly is not an NHL caliber player. Like Dj Smith he would not be employed by any of the other teams.

Nope. Too small. No hockey sense. For depth only. Probably good in the room.
And better options still available at maybe only $500k more for the year. |

Connor would cost a boat load (78 goals, 173 points over the past 2 seasons)
Crouse would be a more affordable option |

Also adding $5.2M in cap is not going to help sign Tarasenko. Sens have about $9.1M cap space. That leaves only 3.9M.
If we took Zadina off their hands, has to be 50% salary retained. Some people have said it, Mathieu Joseph needs to go too. Nearly 3M for him when we have Pinto and possibly Tarasenko to sign |

No way the Wings would ever take Joseph in a deal. First off he's an overpaid bottom 6 guy and Larkin hates him enough to punch him in the face and get suspended. I can't remember who last season on the Wings but another Wings player punched him in the face again. He isn't liked at all by Wings players.
Zadina by the way is going to have his contract terminated so the Wings don't have to get rid of him. He won't play in Grand Rapids and said he would not fight if the Wings terminated his contract so he's as good as gone.
As for Connor, yes he would cost a lot more but worth it in my opinion. He's a player that makes other players better not one that needs others to make him better.
Crouse would be cheaper and he doesn't bring high offense but he brings much more than just offense. Would love to have him in Detroit. |

Maybe the Red Wings players would like the opportunity to punch him everyday. |
