I liked his game. Created scoring chances and drew penalties. Just had scoring ability. - tomburton99

I liked him a lot too. Shame he couldn't get more bounces.
Over/Under he scores 20+ this season. |

I definitely think a large percentage of the reason GG got canned is because of the lack of development of the kids. Laf and Kakko specifically. Hopefully Lavy has a mandate to get the most out of those two, and more PP time is one way to do it. Or at least play them top 6 minutes. This team needs a changing of the guard - Slimtj100
I think you're partially right about GG. The kids need to be put in the best position to be successful and securing top 6 minutes does that. I think Laviolette has his work cut out for him. Because, at what expense do we do this and for how long? Meaning, what if it's more of the same from Laf & Kakko with their inability to finish and (moreso for Laf) inability to create any space for themselves? Sure we can move CK20 up and down the lineup, it would just be worrisome for the future of this franchise. Especially if the kids are getting PP time as well and the results aren't coming. We are essentially in a worse position than last year with the Hurricanes & Devils bolstering their lineups. But the cup isn't won in October and I know with a healthy Igor, we can compete with anyone. The NYR thought a big step from the kids was needed last year? I feel this year is even more imperative.
I think I know what most are going to say but I want to ask anyway. Between KK and Laf, who do you fellas think has the better chance of being a 30g/20a or vice versa type of player this upcoming year? And why?

The reality is if laf and Kakko don’t take the next step this franchise has no chance at a cup. They did a rebuild to get those top pick opportunities. You can’t blow them or you turn into a mid standings team. Especially in a salary cap league with more and more franchises locking up their young stars and not letting them hit the open market |

The thing is, it’s virtually impossible for them to take “the next step” being in the exact same situation they’d be in (3rd line minutes, fractional PP1 time) Either Panarin gets less 5 on 5 ice time, or less PP1 ice time. Kakko I think would be best served on the top line, and Laf best served on PP1.
I can’t give up on either yet. It’s too soon. But they have to put them in a position where the questions are put to bed. 5 on 5 their numbers are not terrible by any means
For comparable, imo…If they get Nichuskins ceiling from Kakko, and Giroux ceiling from Laf…I think that’s great. |

Kakko has a 30/30 ceiling.
Laf may top 30 goals at some point, but his game is forecheck and playmaking. At his best he’s probably 25ish goals and lots of assists. But you need to play him with guys who finish and therefore absorb some attention.
Also… he was NEVER billed as a generational talent. Anyone who said that was wrong.
That’s Crosby. Or McDavid.
He’s a foundational piece. But not if you give him 13-15 minutes a night, and not with your best players, and no PP time
It’s poor asset management.
Kakko and LaFreniere are forecheck, possession guys. Play them with Zib. Or maybe Trochek.
Get the puck in, down low, possess and cycle. They’ll find opportunities there. And a C between them that can win a faceoff would help too. They had tons of O-Zone starts resulting in lost faceoffs due to Chytil being 39.8% this past season. |

100% agreed. You have to see what it is you have in the two of them. It is just going to be interesting to see how it unfolds. Do you think they should be on two different lines 5v5? Their numbers weren't bad, but I was really hoping Laf would relish the opportunity to be on the top line last year when given the opportunity and he squandered it. Hope that changes this year.
If Laf can have 1/2 the career Giroux had, I'd be thrilled |

My take on this is that they have generally the same chance of being 50 point players. I mean, they were separated by 1 point last year, right? It depends on their situations. I feel like Kakko should end the year with more points, but who knows.
I base this on the belief that they should both be playing RW and that gives KK an advantage, being his natural position. Also because of this, I'd slot KK in on 1RW and Laffy as 2RW, so they can be given the best chances to succeed. Vesey or Wheeler could slot into Laf's spot periodically if he's struggling. But, it should be considered HIS spot if we are going to get the most that we can out of our line up. |

We are on the same page
The best rangers lineup right now imo
Laf Zib Kakko
Panarin Chytil Vesey (maybe wheeler, but his D deficiencies may not fit with them)
Kreider Trocheck Wheeler
Goodrow Bones Pitlick
The kid line together lost a lot of luster for me vs NJ. I don’t think those 3 need to be together permanently anymore
If they did that I could get off my Laf PP1 beat the dead horse stance |
