PENGUINS Receive: Erik Karlsson ($9 Million AAV)
SHARKS Receive: Pierre-Olivier Joseph, 2 1st round picks (likely lottery protected) and Mikael Granlund (probably flipped to a 3rd team)
I’d do that.
I’d also try to deal Carter/Pickering/1st RP for Konecny. |

The return on Karlsson is going to be very underwhelming. If he gets two 1sts it would take half retention. SJ has no bargaining power, they are just waiting out for someone to come close to something reasonable. |

I dont get how much leverage San Jose has here. You have, realistically, probably 3-4 teams involved. no one else can afford him or wants him.
Karlsson has a full no movement clause. So of those 3-4 teams, he might have his heart set on one of them. That pretty much removes all SJ leverage.
To me, I'd make a deal surrounding Ty Smith, a top 10 protected 2024 1st, Petry, Granlund and a conditional 2nd or 3rd 2025 pick that could become a 1st if the Penguins achieve something in the playoffs or if Karlsson wins the Norris again. |

Cap still doesn’t work that. Imagine they’d have to trade Petry for “future considerations” if that’s the actual deal.

This is what I was thinking as well. The cap wouldn't work and Petry would probably be moved elsewhere. |

I would trade 1 first round pick without question. I would even trade Pickering without issue. Unless we picked up a 1st somewhere else I wouldn't like the fact that we wouldn't have a pick going into next year's off-season and trade deadline. Plus giving up POJ and two first round picks with minimal retention seems bad. They would have to be another team picking up some cap space to make it closer to a 6-7 million cap hit to make it worth that. I would love the Konecny trade. |

I'm not too hot on giving up two 1sts with this older team....even with Karlsson there's a very good chance they miss the playoffs again. I dont know, part of me just wants the entertainment value of EK on the Pens at whatever cost for right now...the other part of me knows I was a Penguins fan long before this core and will be long after...stuff like this hurts the after...and the after isnt all that far away haha |

We don't miss the playoffs with Karlsson. Now we may get beat in the first round 🤣 |

I think Karlsson wants to come here, if the Carolina trade rumor is true I feel that would be done by now. |

As I mentioned yesterday I think its the 3rd team, most likely BHawks, that are holding this up. They are probably trying to squeeze as much as they can out of this, and rightfully so. Why would they care about the betterment of any other team than their own? hahaha |

Both sides would be wise to tell them to screw off then, have the pens give the sharks a little more for them to retain an extra $1-2M then find a different party to retain $1M, which even for 4 years, shouldn’t cost that much. Arizona isn’t hitting the cap ceiling anytime soon and should be all over that. |

The 1st would be the compensation for taking Carter's corpse, and I don't think I'd take what will essentially be a late 1st for Konecny. |

Perhaps this is all held up by whether the Canes get Tarasenko or not....if they don't, EK to the Canes.
If I were EK, and my career is on the back 9 with no cups yet, I would chose the Canes over the Pens at this point. |

I think Tarasenko/Debrincat are holding a few things up.
Debrincat getting traded could mean Tarasenko to Ottawa.
Tarasenko to Ottawa could mean EK and Tatar to Carolina. |

But yeah, your breakdown takes what I said a bit further and I think this idea has merit for sure..

It has to be hard for GM's to get to the point where they are retaining cap space for FOUR years. I think Dubas is being shrewd because he could have easily panicked already and got the deal done by not getting as much retained or by forking over a ton of assets.
The real challenge for San Jose might be mentally, as literally everything with Karlssons name attached to it (other than his Norris) has been a GM nightmare. They got killed on the assets they gave up for him. They went way overboard on the contract. And now do you want to be the GM who eats $4M in salary retention for 4 years on the reigning Norris winner without getting an absolutely absurd haul? If I was Grier I'd sit on it for a year before I took a light return on that deal.

I actually think it is a Pesce trade that is holding up any EK deal for Carolina. They probably need to move him and secure assets to make the move they want for Karlsson.
I think the Leafs are 100% going to trade Nylander. Nylander for Pesce is a trade that makes sense in a bubble, but hearing Nylanders camp throwing out a $10M AAV talking point should scare everyone off.
