Maybe that true but the acquiring team also has to consider that TO could just choose to deal Nylander rights at the draft or let him walk away and gain $7M is cap space. Next years UFA crop is expected to be very good. In a time where the cap has been flat for 4 years and now increasing by as much as $5M, to have an additional $7M on top of that to go hunting with us like like finding adamantium

If next years crop is supposed to be good, why would any team trade for Nylander now?

They can just wait until the market is flooded with all these good UFAs and get a better deal.

But if Nylander is traded for Pageau, then that eats up $5M of cap space over the next 2 years. Actually would be closer to $6-7M depending on what Wahlstrom signs for. So first trade Nylander, then sign Wahlstrom, then see what's left for Matthews. Sometimes things don't seem logical, but this is what sources are saying.

obviously they need to solidify the contracts/money coming back in order to determine how much they will have for Matthews, their UFAs and Marner + Tavares the following year. they handed out big money early on and made the mistake of letting everyone go to UFA

why keep putting this crap on the site

No one needs to wait for Nylander to be traded, Matthews contract is for next years cap,

willie just needs to say I am not resigning for anything less than 9 and they trade him and not take back dead useless players, or hang on and dump him at the trade deadline to a non contending team (not part of his 10 team)

Thats a fair point. While next season is expected to have a good UFA crop and the advantage of an significantly increased cap, in a 32 team league safe to say at least 50% of them view themselves as non traditional hockey market that has trouble attracting big name UFA’s. GM have different philosophies and strategies. One GM may only trade for Willy if it’s a sign and trade and they don’t mind the $10M cap hit because they don’t have too many players of that ilk or it may help them meet the cap floor, all of that, none of that. another GM with cap space may believe that he has a reasonable shot at convincing Nylander to sign long term but wants the benefit of a entire season to court rather the 10 secs after noon on July 1, 2024. Many reasons why a team might choose to just get the bird in hand now rather than have to bid next summer.

You want a win win scenario. Trade him and gain assists, AND, we only have Domi and Bert signed till next summer, so that money will be free. Players don’t always want to go to a particular team so your can’t assume that just because you have the money, you get the player. You can’t let them walk, if you can help it.
