Say what you want about Dubas. The guy knows how to land the big fish. I know the chances of Karlson putting up 100 pts again is unlikely. However, Pens just got a little more interesting. |

I would say a lot more interesting. Even if Karrlson puts up 70 points it will have a huge impact. With Letang already there the pp will probably be elite. If they can stay healthy they will more then likely be a contender. Their biggest issue is goaltending imo. I don’t think Jarry is a good goaltender. Defending and goaltending will be their negative but I believe there’s a very good chance the offensive output may overcome whatever defensive shortcomings they have. |

I still don't think they're a contender (as in, Cup contender) with or without Karlsson. He'll boost their offense for sure but their defensive play will likely still be pretty lackluster and I don't have much faith in Jarry either. Karlsson is obviously an elite point producer on the blueline but he's a terrible defender.
Plus Guentzel will be missing for at least the first month of the season and Malkin's heath is a total crapshoot. I think adding EK means they'll probably make it back to the playoffs, but I'm not so sure they're going to do much damage once they get there. |

Yeah maybe not a sure fire. The two biggest hurdles for them that we both mentioned in our posts are staying healthy and defense(I’m including Jarry in that). I’m not sold on Jarry either but if both him and the team can stay healthy they have a shot imo. It all revolves around how Karrlson performs and fits in. It looks like a pretty good fit to me but who knows. I’m of course hoping for Karrlson to fall flat on his face followed by a cataclysmic team wide implosion. |

I would agree. I think it gets them to the dance. It will be interesting to see what Dubas has up his sleeve.

They’re a better team then they were last season at the very least. Didn’t make the playoffs last season on that last game implosion which allowed us in. They also lost some dead weight in the process. It will make it tougher for us to make the playoffs. Have to assume the canes and devils will improve this season. |

If the Devils find a way to land some above-average goaltending they are going to be a very good team. Them, the Rangers, and the Canes are highly likely to finish top-3 in the Metro. |

Yep which is kind of my point. With the pens seemingly being more competitive this upcoming season it is becoming more difficult for the islanders to even squeeze in. That’s without even factoring the Sabres making a push which you have to assume they’ll do. |

I still feel better about the Islanders upcoming season given the fact that they'll have a full year of Horvat/Barzal playing together, Engvall, etc...
I think they will see an uptick in offense, I just don't know if it will be marginal or meaningful. The problem really lies in that I think some of the other teams that were already good in the Metro have added some strong upgrades. Toffoli and a full year of Meier on the Devils and Bunting/Orlov with the Canes. |

The questions are is the offense good enough to go on a run and will the team have to struggle the entire year to make the playoffs. |

Yeah absolutely and my point is that with Karrlson the penguins are probably improved as well. That potentially creates another hurdle for us. I think it’s safe to say he puts up 70 or more points next season. That probably gets them at least 5 or more wins even factoring in the potential defensive short comings I would think. That’s also with thinking they stay reasonably healthy.
All hypotheticals. Maybe they get hammered with injuries or Karrlson has a down year. Hope so. Point is looking at it right now it’s hard for me to think they’re not a better team with him in the lineup. That improvement no matter how slight or significant could be the difference between us making the playoffs or not…
That’s without even factoring in other teams maturation/improvement in the division/conference. Is our team going to be that much better to stay ahead of that curve? Hope so but that’s far from a sure bet. It becomes a bit tougher for us imo. |

Despite the obvious need for an increase in scoring, I think a lot of this year really hinges on the defense. Pulock and Dobson did not have great regular seasons last year. We need those two to have some pretty significant improvement, which I'm confident about. Romanov is going to need to progress as well. If that happens, a marginal improvement in scoring/PP will definitely make them a better team. But it is going to be hard to keep pace with the rest of the division. |
