If they don’t win a cup during his current contract, then I can’t see them really paying him anything significant. - Arctic_AARDVARK
6 mill for a PPG captain won’t be much by the time he needs a new one… bet the NHL will be damn close to $90 by then
As an $11 mill guy he’s overpaid… as a $6 mill captain I personally wouldn’t be complaining |

Since they are saying the Leafs are asking $2.4m and Samsonov is asking $4.9m, I don't think they are reaching a compromise before Friday. Obviously I don't know, but I'd imagine that the Leafs would like to keep Sammy and would like to have him with term, but the money just isn't there unless they make a trade.
As it stands, if the Leafs trade Matt Murray or are able to put him on LTIR for the season, they would have about $3m for Samsonov without having to make any moves (going 12F, 7D, 2G on the roster).
If the Leafs had to buyout Murray, they would have about $2.4m ($2.35 by my count, but maybe I'm slightly off - hence the $2.4m ask) to sign Samsonov.
I honestly believe that any term given to Samsonov would come with a higher figure that they can't afford without moving a roster player out.
But it's a serious roll of the dice for the Leafs - because if the arbiter gives Sammy more than $3m, it's going to be problematic. - Monkeypunk
Thought LTIR can't kick in until after the first game, and teams need to be Cap compliant before the season starts, don't they?
So in this case not sure how LTIR can help...

I don't know who started this, but it's been going on for years that teams that know a player is going to begin the year on LTIR apply for offseason use and don't need to wait until day 1 of the season.
Over the years, guys like Clarkson, Horton, Hossa, Seabrook, Weber, Price and so on have been known to be entering LTIR and did not affect their respective team's cap allowing the team to use the available cap space to replace that player during free agency - first within the 10% offseason overage, and then prior to the start of the season, within the application of LTIR. So it's not an issue - as long as they can prove that he's medically unable to play.

THAT is the real kicker there. Works fine with Muzzin because he's riding out the contract and pretty much getting paid/covered by insurance and is done as a player I think, unfortunately cause I like him. Murray I don't know, unless MLSE has Tonya Harding on speed dial with a crowbar
Dozzer think JT rides out the contract and possibly just retires. He is getting towards being done honestly and think he knows it too. Maybe he takes less like Spezza to play a season or two more but...
As for the defence, yeah we need that physical stay at home defence type still. It's lacking a bit. Not sure how we add that WITHOUT moving Brodie though. You need that money there reallocated. Tree maybe waits towards trade deadline and sees what we have and can do? I dunno... |

I see JT staying with the Leafs for a much more reasonable salary. Murray will be moved out. Moving Brodie is more complicated, depends on what is done with Nylander. |

To be clear - I am going on information from Friedman that was initially conveyed by Friedman - which said that Murray might not be healthy enough to buy out.
If that is true, then he is an LTIR candidate. If that is not correct information, then he will be bought out or traded.
The way the cap works is that you may be 10% over the salary cap in the offseason (carrying up to basically $92m). While LTIR does not apply in the offseason, the league has allowed, in extenuating circumstances, teams to exceed this when a player is on permanent LTIR.
All teams must submit a cap compliant roster - including LTIR applicants - by 2pm the day before the regular season starts, which I believe means by October 9, 2023. Since games aren't played until October 10, all teams should be compliant.
There is one additional wrinkle that occurs when exiting training camp with a player being on LTIR - If a team can’t get under the cap before the end of Training Camp, the normal LTIR formula (team's Accruable Cap Space Limit (ACSL) = Salary Cap Limit - Team's Cap Space) is not used, and instead they use ACSL = Team cap hit – LTIR player’s (or players') cap hit.
The notion that Brandon Pridham isn't intimately aware of all of these nuances and shenanigans is laughable and any of us plebs who are questioning it are being ridiculous. |

By the time he signs a new deal he wont be ppg and definitely wont be throughout the term of the new deal most likely.
Im thinking/hoping $4m per for jt on a new deal.

I saw this in my hockey feed and when I read the headline, I thought to myself - "This has to be a Tanner article". I clicked on it and it's not Tanner.

I think a lot of things about the Leafs are still up in the air, but I think the chances of them qualifying for the playoffs is hovering in the high 90-percents or close to 100%. There is too much talent on that roster to flame out that badly. |

Why would he get less than ROR if he’s looking for a payday? Same age, better numbers and a higher cap. He may choose to take less but he could get more than $4M |

For the second part of this - JT will turn 33 in a couple of months and will be 35 on any new deal. Depending on where the cap is and what his desire to remain is will determine what he makes and if it's here. Let's say that the salary cap is around $92m entering the 25-26 season, as projected - and the other forwards to sign considerable deals over that age - Pavelski ($5.5m at 37, and $3.5m at 38), Malkin 4x$6.1m at 35, Ovechkin 5x$9.5m at 35, Stastny was $3.75m, Getzlaf was $3m . . .
Meanwhile JT just came off of a 36 goal campaign - he may have lost a step, but he's still in the top-30 in goal scorers. It's possible he takes around $4.5m at 35, which is in line with a Getzlaf or Stastny, if his stats decline - but if he keeps popping in 30, he'll be in the Pavelski category and looking more for $6.5m.
