If you think the draft is only 1 round, you don't understand what you're talking about. - washedup20
Players picked past the 1st round have extremely low odds of making the NHL.

What are you trying to say with this? - washedup20
That I think your original post is an overreaction.
The Sabres have drafted many players that can fit into the middle 6 of an NHL roster.
There will always be 4th line guys you can acquire via waivers, free agency, and trade if need be.
With as low as a likelihood of finding an NHL player in the draft, you should be shooting for the stars and betting on stylistic traits |

Not sure I'd say extremely low, but it drops off hard, even in the 1st.

So the Sabres drafting good middle 6 players in the early 2000's is related to this point how?
For the bolded, 3 GM's failed to properly fill those roles and the current roster is lacking the same.
I disagree with how you think a hockey roster should be constructed. I think you over value skilled roles and ignore the rest of what makes a team. |

You are ignoring half of a roster with how you want to draft.

I think his point is more that the other half can be filled through other avenues |

Which is wrong, and has yet to happen for 3 GM's.
Plugging randoms in does not work.

Gritty complimentary players have been going for a big premium. I think it's a very fair point.

So why limit yourself to only those avenues.
These role players have to do all the dirty work and receive little admiration. A drafted and developed support player is not a lock either but that doesn't mean you ignore them while drafting.
Especially when the existing prospect pool is already set up the way it is. That's bad management.

Yes, to teams who need that 1 or 2 players to give them extra depth to make a playoff push.

You don't have to ignore it, but I understand the argument for not making it an equal priority to drafting high end skill guys. |

You can understand that all you want, then go watch the Sabres get beat up around the ice.
The Sabres have close to 0 depth players in the system with an overloaded top end prospect pool, adjustments are required.

The follow on to that is trusting KA to make moves to fill those needs. That's fallen flat so far.

Yea but the solution isnt to start drafting heavily on this premise either. The solution is to find a GM who can make those moves if KA can't. |

I guess my problem is i simply don't care. Like of all the things holding the Sabres back right now, this probably ranks 13th?
Its like being a NJ fan and worrying that they dont have those kinds of players in their system because Hughes gets targeted. As if the presence of someone in the system would change that.
Thats what I loved about VGK. Reaves is irrelevant, Stone being tough as nails while he was being targeted with a bad back is why they won. Obviously more than just him displaying this sort of durability, but he's the clearest example. - Michael Ghofrani
You're first statement is false, the Sabres desperately need those roles filled. Properly filled roles would balance out the roster, improve defensive play and allow the skill players to do there thing.
What are the 12 higher problems for the Sabres over having an unbalanced roster?
NJ wins, so there is no comparison with them. They don't play soft either.
Reaves hasn't played in Vegas in years, they won in large part to their role players excelling at their roles. Those role players are huge and tough, so not sure what you are saying here.
This is not just about fighting like every single one of you reduce it too.
