Imagine you work in the analytics department, building projects for the team that take months to develop, only for the team to turn around and throw money at Kane, would you stick around?

If you're gunna operate on the exact opposite of the reasons you brought those guys to the team in the first place, how long do you suppose theyll stick around?

I know hes beloved by the south buffalo folks in here, but for a lot of people not from that patch of land, he's a bad dude with a checkered past who sucks at hockey. As it turns out, the south buffalo isnt enough if you can believe that!

No, it's very boring how bad he is.
- Michael Ghofrani

Now yea.

Average fan don’t give a poop about that. They see Patrick Kane. OMG OMG OMG.

don’t underestimate how simple Buffalo and the majority of fans are.

What you actually mean is that age and injuries are not treating him well and that his impact has been minimalized at this stage of his career.

I'm not a Patrick Kane to Buffalo supporter by any means, but he is not a bad hockey player.

Is Mario Lemieux a bad hockey player?

- TheSabresTaco

Today's Mario Lemieux? Or the one from his prime? Because that would be the distinction here, right?

We're not getting the version of Pat Kane who drove play and made everyone around him look better.

I think even suggesting that the nerds are the absolute trump case in all decisions is setting the wrong expectations for the that group of employees.
Hopefully they are not of that mindset and understand it is a piece of the puzzle... not the only factors to be considered.

I think the average fan wouldnt care either way, right?

If they are in a playoff spot by the time Kane is healthy, would fans care if kane signed elsewhere?

people want the hometown hero to return.

or 'hero' whatever. it's natural.

He may be considered the best American player ever, and he's from Buffalo. To some, all they want to see is the man wearing a crest. To others, yeah it's nice until he hits the ice.

He's 34, coming off hip surgery. If his recovery goes well, who would bring more value to their respective teams when healthy:

Olofsson
Mitts
Greenway
Krebs
Kane

There is a realistic chance he outperforms the middle 6 of the Sabres.

There's also a hefty contingent who don't like him for him.

I am ambivalent on that point

best case scenario, he's better than Olofsson. Krebs, Greenway play different roles. Casey is all likelihood is still a better impact.

Most analytics departments are major drivers of decision making, they work with the pro scouts of course but they are also not a contingent you want leaving over something like this (my original point)

I see a clear distinction myself, yet I have asked the same question about Mitts...should he be signed long term, is he a core piece.
I think he is on the cusp, and I'd like to see that consistency play out for real over the upcoming season.
However, in thinking about down the road in say 2 years, he becomes a prime trade chip IMO...good enough to get a solid return at a position of need, and likely too expensive to retain given the pool of then-ready younger players.

I sincerely believe the middle six players are likely to be churned when their contracts become relatively expensive.

- IonSabres

They have a year to make that decision and an army of 1st rounders coming for his job. It was a tough puzzle to piece together before they drafted Benson. Something has to give next summer.

Now that is established, pending $ and term - it could help the Sabres chances of making the playoffs.

That's a story line for the ages, local boy comes home and brings the hometown team into the dance.

I think that number is very small.

Going to Chicago games here all you see is Kane Jerseys.

Hell going to a Rangers game this year it was Kane jerseys everywhere.

Would it be cool to see Kane in a Sabres jersey, yea I guess.

Do I need it to happen. Not in the slightest.

The story line is undeniable, but I think people, even those who believe hes still great offensively, wildly overestimate the value it would add here.

He's bottom 1% defensively, how much offense would he need to provide directly/indirectly for him to offset that?

It was a huge problem for the team last year. Team defense, specifically help on D from forwards.

How does adding Kane help that?

I know the main point here is the goalies were bad besides Levi but this backs up something I mentioned on a podcast in April iirc that I was told Comrie graded out better than UPL in some private models.

Per 60 it’s -0.242 for Comrie & -0.358 for UPL.

Open. Competition.
