the suspension is by far not the worst part of being outed as a sexual predator.

They won't have to register as sexual offenders, it's essentially shaming them at this point. The case was closed until:

"Canada’s minister of sport, Pascale St-Onge, announced that federal funding for the organization was to be frozen until the organization signed on with the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC) and provided detailed plans on implementing change to prohibit actions like those that allegedly happened in 2018 from occurring again.

Corporate sponsors of Hockey Canada, such as Scotiabank, TELUS, Canadian Tire, Tim Hortons, and Imperial Oil (Esso) paused sponsorships that were planned out for the World Juniors until change occurred with the organization

As a result, Hockey Canada signed onto OSIC and reopened its investigation in July. Hockey Canada admitted that they "have not done enough to address the actions of some members of the 2018 National Junior Team, or to end the culture of toxic behavior within our game."

I am not condoning the behavior or actions of those involved, but the current situation has escalated as a result of funding not the horrors of the act.

I'm not sure if the defendant wanted to press charges or if there was enough evidence to do so. I'd need to read up on it again.

What I can tell you is that the case was settled, using a lot of money from HC's pocket.

I think part of the issue is that, that general slush fund may contain public monies. Which is a huge problem.

The initial case I believe was criminal but it was settled. Regardless, the case was settled with fat HC cash. The cash used to settle the case was even a dubious use of the funds. There's some information out there somewhere stating that it's essentially a general slush fund that's used on players' well being (?) but in this case was used to settle a criminal or civil case.

This is no longer about court, it's simple accountability.

- TheSabresTaco

Regarding the funding of it - yea it seems they were misappropriating funds and this wasn't the only instance of them settling a similar situation with the money.

Hockey Canada executives told a House of Commons committee Wednesday that they've paid $8.9 million for sexual abuse settlements to 21 complainants since 1989.

Hockey Canada CEO Scott Smith told the standing committee on Canadian Heritage that he will not resign from his position. He told MPs he's capable of creating change within the embattled organization.

Hockey Canada chief financial officer Brian Cairo testified that Hockey Canada paid $7.6 million settlement money for nine claims out of its "National Equity Fund." Cairo said the fund is generated by Hockey Canada membership fees and investments.

I'd be pretty pissed as a parent paying Membership fees for my kid to play the sport so that it can be used as hush money for some numb skulls.

Just confirming what I said in my last post, so they absolutely used public monies in an inappropriate way.

And yes, unfortunately obviously, their hand was forced based on funding.

And correct, there's no official registration of being a sexual predator, as not only the case is legally closed but also the public doesn't know exactly how these players were involved, but being outed publicly as a predator has some serious monetary and public repercussions. If these players are tweeners, their careers in NA are at serious risk.

If they're like Evander Kane (with his known discretions, sexual assault not being one of them), he'll get another chance

so the NHL is going to suspend players on accusations for prospects that may not have even been under nhl contracts?

not convictions or even arrests

but accusations

nhlpa will have a field day with this

assuming it happened

what if the woman agreed to it and changed her story after public embarrassment

it's possible

Reading the reports and articles that follow up will be important to learn the entire story.

But HC settled based on specific player involvement. Which means they had a good case against these exact players.

I don't know if any of these players were arrested. But they were named in court. And HC's lawyers knew enough to make it go away.

I hardly think this is as flimsy as an 'accusation'

I think the Sabres should put the team up in a hotel even for home games as they play better in that setting vs whatever they are doing at home.

This post is all over the place. But generally I disagree, except for the general blanket statement that, yes, sometimes people change their stories.

Don't know that much on this one, but why is the NHL investigating 5 years later?

Who holds the women accountable when they falsely accuse these athletes and ruin their careers?

The court doesn't, the public forgets about it, but the names of the athletes are remembered and tarnished even if they done nothing wrong.

It is not guilty till proven innocent.
