And this is the guy who won best defenseman, so (frank)ed up.

- BetweenTheDots

And this is why it’s imperative that Korchinski earn his spot in the lineup when he’s strong defensively so he can be the guy who the coach wants on the ice in any situation, not just offensive ones.

That was quite the deal Dubas orchestrated to land Karlsson, I’m glad KD stayed out of this situation. I don’t think it was worth it for just a 2nd round pick and a bunch of spare parts.
- DarthKane

With Tarasenko and Karlsson settled on new teams I would expect a few more moves will be made in August.
Nylander or other Leafs
Flames and Jets looking to reshape rosters a little
UFA's - Dumba, Tatar, Kessel, etc....
Other teams looking for cap space. Leafs, Lightning, Habs, Caps, Islanders, Stars, Av's, Knights, Flames....
Training camps start opening Sept. 11

Dumbs signed with Arizona today, 1 year @ $4 million.

I wonder what KD has planned, my guess is that he’s waiting on the waiver wire to generate a depth right-handed d-man.

For the life of me, I cannot understand what Pittsburgh is doing.

They didn't even make the playoffs, you think Karlsson moves them to a cup contender

I just don't understand why teams try and get "just one more shot at the cup" when they've failed for multiple years doing the same thing.

I guess they think they are going to win a lot of 8-7 games????

I think most GMs will fall into this trap because they realize they will probably have to do a 5-7 year rebuild. Probably the best move is to release the GM when it’s obvious the team can’t win anymore. Of course that will take an owner that is willing to have some lean years at the gate. You’d almost think all of this is driven by money.

And Guentzel just went down and had ankle surgery. Due to miss the start of the yr and he's their best winger. ....... So so hard to let a great era go for a franchise.

Everyone on the PIT blog love this move since they got rid of a bunch of bad contracts. Good for them, but outside of Karlsson (who I don’t think can maintain his level of play from last year) they haven’t really improved much.

Kiviharju´s skating is a big concern for me. For his size skating must be a strength not weakness. And if he doesn´t prove that a lot I can´t see him succeeding in NHL.
- MjulQvist

Always helpful when you weigh in, MjulQvist. ........ I haven't studied up and Kiviharju's game but his elite brain jumps out quick. Yep, smallish Dmen need to have at least solid skating. He'll get drafted just a matter of where. Skating can always be improved but you are born with hockey IQ and Kiviharju has that in spades.

Interesting situation with Petry going back to Montreal. Supposedly his wife wanted out of Montreal last year and Candiens' GM Hughes obliged him by trading him to PIT. Now he's back.
Maybe he got divorced LOL. Montreal blogger thinking Hughes may flip him with some retention. Some team can get him for about 2.3M.

they can love getting some bad contracts gone, but when they have to rebuild after next year, they are depleting the draft picks they have.

Guess they figure they can trade Crosby, Malkin, Karlsson, for picks after this year, but those are some pretty hefty retentions.

Karlsson had 100 points last season and SJS finished with the 4th worst record. Without him and with the addition of 2 over the hill forwards in Granlund and Hoffman, I see them finishing dead last and the favorite for landing
Celebrini.

If this year taught us anything, finishing last doesn't guarantee you anything but a top 3 pick

This is the OEL trade to Vancouver all over again. Trading some short term bad contracts for a long term albatross. I see a buyout for Pitt in the near future.

Is it possible that all 3 teams lost this trade? I can't find a winner here.

It's the shell game of bad contracts. I heard MTL may trade Petry, so if they can do that then they may be the winner. I guess his wife didn't want to live in MTL, so that's why he was traded to PITT.

While finishing up watching only the first game of Ivan Hlinka tourney, I started thinking how I see my first chance of error by Kyle Davidson.

It is in regards to the tarde with Philly of pick #51.

And I know little if I am correct on the first part, that the Hawks may have had their eye on drafting size in USA forward Danny Nelson, but he was chosen at #49, thus the move out of #50 so Philly could take the last of the 3 top goalies.

They got a sixths rounder ( Milton Oscarson ) and exchanged this second rounder for one in 2024.
The2023 traded first rounder was Tampa Bay's in the Seabrook contract trade.

That means it was at slot #19 in this strong 2023 draft, and traded it not for Philly's 2024 2nd rounder, but one they acquired, Los Angeles' second rounder.

Is it fair to say that the LA Kings will finish with a 2024 pick that is at very best in the mid-twenties, in a weaker draft?

Is that 6th round Oscarsson pick going to act as the equalizer in taking a "less positioned" second rounder?

- wiz1901

Wiz, I kind of jumped over this post earlier but think I have to agree. Pushing a pick out to next year to even out the pipeline can be OK, but as you say it is a bit of a downgrade. Getting back the missing 6th rounder is good, as it gives a scout a chance to advocate for a player. It's unclear what Oscarson brings, he is a little older and his numbers aren't impressive. Will root for him but the upside is not apparent yet.

As for the traded pick #51: While I admit to being pretty much the "Worst. Scout. Ever." I was pounding the table for Gracyn Sawchyn in Round 2 and he was still available at #51, as were some other WHL prospects. Will go on record in favor of taking Sawchyn there rather than trading out.

Nevertheless I am still intrigued by some of the seemingly strange trades that KD makes. Oscarson with an acquired #6. Gorman at last draft for a #6. Saarijarvi with some good years in the Swiss league as a throw-in in the Kane trade. Always a little low-level mystery to add some color to things.

That is true. He must focus on his skating and improving it. Right now he reminds me of left handed Adam Boqvist.

Looking forward to the 2024 draft and assuming the Hawks do not draft #1 again, Sam D ickinson is the early target for me.
- DarthKane

Yeah, he is pretty solid all around and looks like a pillar in some team's foundation.

San Jose added a first and second, dumped big contract

Habs got a goalie.

I won't talk about any of theses veterans who were traded, but the Penguins basically trade four vets (no matter what we think about their upside/downsides) for one.

They have a four core defense of Ryan Graves a sho blocker, Marcus Pettersson, Kris (Am I on IR ?) Letting and Karlsson.
I am not sure I count on their others or soon to be pro Owen Pickering as my 3rd pair.

Olivier-Joseph/Ty Smith is about league average any other 5th-6th defensive pairing in the league.

RIP Bob. Always remember him because we had a family friend with the same name whose daughter I took to my senior prom.

Just looked Bob up and saw his short era ended with the beginning of the Keenan era.

From Wiki, I saw he went from winning the Adams with the Jets to coaching in Europe in a short span of time, giving him as many Adams' as coach Q!!!
