Sure it does. But the going rate for a 25 year old coming off consecutive 60+ point seasons is 7 million.

90 point players would make 9.

Now back to what the INITIAL discussion was...

Tippett having a career year (30 some goals and 60 point season). Worth 7m+?

- Glak18

Not in Philly in my book because he would be 25 then, and will be about 28-29 before we are even beginning to be contenders at best.

Having said that, my belief is the reason you see so many teams do that sort of signing (and why Flyers will almost certainly resign him) is purely because of the economic incentives. NHL is very attendance driven in terms of revenue. In a big but fickle market, you have to have at least a few guys to come and watch, else fans simply tune out till you do.

Personally I think the Hayes trade was more damaging to the Flyers. Dead cap of 3.5m for 3 years and only getting a 6th is inexcusable, but realistically Danny had to find anyway possible to correct previous mistakes.

I still can't accept that Hayes at 3.5m, even if you hate him, isn't worth more than what the Flyers got. The argument no one wants him is invalid because St. Louis traded for him and other teams signed comparable players for more.

- Glak18

The Flyers hurt themselves the second they thought Hayes deserved to be paid like a star in this league.

I understand the sentiment. But when he signed it gave him the 52nd highest cap hit in the league. Overpaid for sure, but IMO not paid like a star per se. Just paid like a top of the lineup guy, which even at the signing he was not.

How many teams in the league? How many of them have stars? I’d say each team has 1 star. 3 if they’re really good.

The Flyers fans aren't Sixers and Phillies fans. The Flyers could literally ice the bad news bears and they would draw 90% capacity.

First off what's a star? Do you have a tier system where there are "stars" and then there are "superstars"?

Do the Flyers have any stars?

They drew about 90% last season, but there was a lot of anecdotal evidence that this was far from butts on seats. The whole thing about free April tix for next year sth was illustrative. I sincerely believe that is the real reason that led to all the front office changes and Scott retirement.

The problem though is not that they are at 90% or 80% or whatever when things are bad. The problem is that they are at 99% when things are mediocre.

Bob Gainey loved and respected Hatcher a ton in Dallas. He and Matvichuk were shutdown defenders on that 99 Dallas Cup winning team. Hatcher also sidelined Roenick with a punishing hit for a cheap shot by JR that sidelined Modano. Derian was cooked by the time he got to Philly.

Rathje was a bust in SJ.

It’s not splitting Adams. You know who the stars are. The most productive player(s) on a team as well as the league. Obviously players are paid by their production. I consider Travis Konency a star, if not a possible star in the making. A star can rise, a star can fall. Hayes was never either.

The term is splitting atoms, which you transformed to what sounds like the title of a gay porn/bdsm flick.

His response was in that vein, including I suspect, the inadvertent flogging.

I liked your unedited version better.

"Better job of speaking in cliches" ... 'splitting atoms' is a cliche, and if you did indeed do a better job of '"speaking in", your phone would probably transliterate better...

That's true of most good hockey fanbases. Hockey fans like going to games. The NHL's attendance in terms of percentage of seats filled is always high.

Personally, I love going to see live hockey. When they are not good tickets are much cheaper on Stubhub.

As it has been said, some believed Clarke always had a penchant for building a roster to win the previous year's cup. Especially later in his career.
- MBFlyerfan

Clarke definitely came across as someone who was lazy and not completely checked-in late in his GM career.

I wouldn't say he was lazy at all. I just think it seemed like he was always looking backwards instead of forward.

In some ways it was and is a microcosm of this whole organization to this day. Always looking to the past and calling it "Flyers Hockey". Big, tough, grinder type players who had some skill...but who won with determination and grit.

But now, yes, there are plenty of players like that on every team, the difference is their players also have lots of skill.

Well, they really haven't been a Flyers type team for at least a decade now! They were one of the softest teams in the league when the faces of the franchise were Giroux and Voracek.

This is true. Not sure why that is. We were season ticket holders for 20 years, but I haven't been to a game since the 2012 playoff series against the Pens. I've had offers to go with tickets that are paid for and I still won't go. I don't even want to pay for parking, and food and drink there. Put a real product out there and I'll pay my hard earned cash to see it. We ain't stupid. Since 2012 this team has had ZERO chance of winning anything and they really haven't been that exciting either other than Giroux on occasion.

In reference to the Phillies and Sixers, it's remarkable how little they draw if they are even average teams let alone bad. Hell, the Phillies were a very good team last year and still had poor attendance in the midst of a playoff race. Now of course they went to the WS, and now all the frontrunners are back and saying how Philly is an incredible baseball town which is utter BS!

Yeah, I saw the attendance numbers at the end of last season and they were quite impressive. I think the Flyers were ranked way down the list at 90% capacity. Of course, hockey is the smallest venues of the 4 major sports. A hockey rink is much bigger than a basketball court, so there are less seats available at the same arenas for hockey.

keep in mind there are 80 home game s opposed to 40. that makes a diff. phils draw well over 20k every year since the new park opened. Wow can't believe it is coming up on 20 years!!!

by the way that was a huge loss last night. That is gonna come back to bite them.

Just using the present time it is just flat way to fn expensive to go to a sporting event. between ticket, food, beer, parking 500 bucks or so. Now if you dont drink or eat much then it is lower.

My kids take uber to go to events. What's parking like 30-40 ? Last year a Pats game was 50/60 bucks (dont remember what exactly) to fn park!!!!
