Especially when the Leafs go flying off the top ropes and drop the elbow on the Pens in the playoffs. - Zezel
I think the Leafs will punk the Pens in the playoffs if they meet. If the Pens had better goaltending, then it might be closer. |

Yeah hard to win a trade this year with Nylander with that 6.9M cap hit.
I think Tree finds a way to get one of those Flames D by October.
Just Nylander trade is always in the air. |

Nylander, Brodie
for
Backlund, Andersson
Would blow my mind if they traded Anderson, his value to them is greater because he is signed a few years to a solid number and CGY is obviously struggling to sign any talent to term or fair cap hits. Conroy does need to find a way to trade out some of these players who are not re signing so maybe Andersson goes the other way with one for a major trade. |

Sid and Malkin are always frightening. The Pens could miss the playoffs again, or they could be a darkhorse.

The only way that Nylander gets traded is if a top pairing Dman and other players or picks come back. Hanifan, Pulock or the big right-handed D guy from St Louis would qualify. Brodie and someone else would be going with him so Pageau, Mangiponi and a winger from St Louis would be the second piece with either a pick, prospect or bottom six forward or bottom four Dman completing the deal. Money would be reasonably equal or Leafs might actually get some salary cap relief out of this? - crawfordg
Brodie is a $5 mill cap hit who gets paid $7.5 mill this year so nobody will be taking him unless the leafs hand over picks/prospects themselves.
Maybe at the deadline and injuries convince a team to take him on but otherwise I just don’t see it, not when he’s a UFA at the end of the year. |

Bear in mind that the salary matters to some teams, but to many the AAV is far more important. Trading that salary to Arizona wouldn't fly. Trading it to the Rangers wouldn't matter. It all depends on if there's interest and need - and Brodie's are best applied on a playoff team that already has some physical edge to it but could use a stable defensive presence.
I would very much prefer not to trade Brodie and instead find a way to insulate him with a physical presence because he is excellent at separating the puck from the carrier but he is not physically very strong, so he can be exposed down low - which we did see against Florida.
That said, he's far from untradeable simply because his salary exceeds his cap.

Ok to be clear I’m not saying he’s untradable I’m saying that due to his salary the leafs won’t get much of a return for him and it may even cost them to have him moved. I guess knowing who is on his NTC list would be interesting as well.
As for the bolded I would love that. The leafs would have a shutdown pairing that would be truly effective that way. Moving Nylander for a $5 mill shutdown guy, left or right side if getting paired with Brodie, would be nice because that would also come close to opening up the cap space they’re going to need. |

I'm still surprised the Pens didn't finagle more retention in this deal. 13% retained leaves them paying a chonky 10m caphit on a player who is due to regress. If he puts up 100 points again, then he is worth every penny. If his presence is the X factor needed to win a cup, then it's worth every penny of 10m.
If he puts up 50 points and Pens fail to qualify or go deep, then that 10m caphit is going to feel very regrettable.
Good move by Dubas to clear out pylons for an elite d-man, but the long-term verdict is undecided. - GalacticStone

I'm not sure that's true other than the obvious that they need their goalie not to poop their pants.
Letang had his lowest scoring season since 2009 (PPG)
Petry was their next best point producer and is also mediocre defensively at 31 points
They got rid of their bad contracts and lost nothing of significance.

but he is a good player who drives 5v5 results. Its a fun trade and makes the League more interesting.

Do they need a goalie to not poop their pants or do they need an improved d-corps with someone who can handle hard minutes and keep scoring chances down?
EK is a phenomenal rover and can put up points if you let him off the leash (which SJS absolutely did), but is he what the Pens actually need?
This feels like Dubas attempting to tilt the ice again with skill. Think Tyson Barrie+.
Letang may have seen a decline last season but he is still very capable of QBing the Pens PP1 (he had pretty much the same numbers as he did 21/22).
It's a super fun trade but I'm not convinced this trade makes the team better overall.
Time will tell. |
